he does have some value, in terms of cap space.

Weird how he goes for a 2nd and 3rd at the deadline, yet has no value this season. Gillis likely did this as a favour to him to save time, instead of waiting for the right deal. Shame that nothing could be garnered though...

Unfortunate that we couldn't work out a deal to get an asset for him, and unfortunate that he wouldn't accept a reduced role on this team. Kind of makes you appreciate how veterans we've had in the past such as Trevor Linden and Mike Keane are consumate professionals and go about their jobs in such a diligent manner despite reduced roles.

The guy just wants to play, can't blame him for that. It's a shame nobody would take him for 'futures' or something. Hopefully somebody picks him up though, would hate to have to bury his salary in the minors.

If no team picks him up I think he'll just retire.

Still gotta' wait a couple of months to call up Luko. Guess they'll have to rely on Rome to fill in 'til then.

Which sucks for the Canucks as they'd continue to carry his cap hit for the remainder of the season.

If I'm Gillis I'd be a little more than PO'ed with Schneider right now, assuming he was told what type of role he'd have here. If no team claims Schneider the Canucks are stuck with his cap hit for the remainder of the season if he's in the minors or retires. Not a huge cap hit, but with Demitra looking to return in the near future they'll need all the cap space they can get.

Isn't there something about this not applying if it's a one-year deal? Paging Wetcoaster.

Edit: Fine, you'll do, pitseleh. But next time make your reply longer, please. With way more quotes.

Nope. That only applies to multi-year deals.

Quote:
All Player Salary and Bonuses earned in a League Year by a Player who is in the second or later year of a multi-year SPC which was signed when the Player was age 35 or older (as of June 30 of the League Year in which the SPC is to be effective), regardless of whether, or where, the Player is playing, except to the extent the Player is playing under his SPC in the minor leagues, in which case only the Player Salary and Bonuses in excess of $100,000 shall count towards the calculation of Actual Club Salary; plus
That's why Shanahan doesn't count against New Jersey's cap.

I thought a 35+ year old player only has his cap hit count against the cap upon retirement if he signs a multi-year deal.

Edit: Never mind, already asked and answered. You guys are fast.

Sweet, thanks for the info, that slipped my mind. In that case, send him to the minors!

He's just trying to break the record for teams played for. Pretty weak on his part IMO, what kind of role was he hoping for? Good riddance as far as I'm concerned.

One of the few character mistakes Gillis seems to have made so far.

On Tuesday, the Vancouver Canucks placed the 40-year old blueliner on waivers. Schneider is now eligible to be claimed by Noon et on Wednesday by any club, with the Canucks on the hook for half his remaining salary. If he clears waivers, the Canucks can opt to send him down to the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League.
Canucks to pay half his salary? Isn't that just for re-entry waivers?

If they assign him to the AHL (assuming he clears) - the cap hit disappears.

If he retires the cap hit disappears because although he is over 35 it is only a one year deal.

TSN seems to have their info wrong... not surprising.

That killed my pipedream of a large trade involving M. Schneider, C. Schneider and Bieksa all together.

It is - just re-entry waivers NOT down waivers. TSN staff must have partied too much this holiday season.

A redundant signing that took up valuable cap space that now cannot be converted into any kind of asset.

Be funny if he has to retire because no one wants him at a reduced salary (from last year). Talk about misevaluating your value. He had a role with this team and maybe a chance at a cup, but may end up out of the game. Can't wait to get Luko up.

Regained cap space is an asset. The Canucks regain daily space of $14,249 with Schneider gone.

Also opens a roster space.

Looks like bringing Olympian Pavol Demitra back on the roster will not be an issue.
