I know it won't happen, but I'd dance naked in the street if we ever acquired Kovalchuk.

Doesn't sound at all like the kind of trade Gainey would make, thankfully. No way Kovalchuk would re-sign with us.

Almost impossible to sign Kovalchuk, with big contract to Gionta, Gomez an Cammeleri. Next summer you have to sign Carey Price and maybe Halak, 2011 Andrei Markov and dont forget Plekanec unless Plek is on the deal for Kovalchuk. Anyway Kovalchuk is asking for too much money for almost every teams...
If you want to know about the possible destinations for Kovy, please read this good text by spectors.

I wouldn't.
I don't trade Hammer unless a solid D is coming back.

MONTREAL (AMONG OTHER TEAMS) IS INTERESTED!
Get it done and sign him long term Bob ;-)
To Atlanta:
Andrei Kostitsyn
Sergei Kostitsyn
Roman Hamrlik
David Fischer
1st round draft pick in 2010
To Montreal:
Ilya Kovalchuk
Mark Popovic
Cammalleri - Plekanec - Kovalchuk
Pouliot - Gomez - Gionta
Note: You guys think Kovalev was treated like a god here? - LOL
Decent trade. I would if we can sign Kovalchuk to a long term contract. We have 2.4 in cap space. Sign Pleks for a 4.7 or 4 mil and we are filled. But with hamrlik gone and andrei we have enough space to sign kovalchuk. We can trade another piece if needed for cap space possibly.
It shows how much people on these forums know about hockey. This is a possible rental player! But if gainey could talk to kovalchuk and sign him then I wouldn`t mind giving away another prospect ala maxwell to the trade.

Subban can come and take his place. (hamrlik that is)

I suspect the Kovalchuk trade would request 2 current players, 1 top prospect, 1st pick. This is based on the Hossa trade to Pittsburgh 2 seasons ago.
Habs 2 current players (Cristenson, Armstrong): D'Agostini, Lapierre
Top prospect (Esposito): Subban or Leblanc ... I would try to sell Fisher or Weber big time instead if I was Gainey.
Habs 1st pick 2010
For
Kovalchuk

No he can't. If he truly could, then he would already be with us.
Hamrlik is a top 2 on many teams, Subban is playing in the AHL.
You're either greatly overrating Subban, or underestimating Hammer.

It was a rough example because cap wise it do not work. Habs need to add more salary dump.

My guess is that Eklund mentionned Habs being interested in Kovalchuk just so he gets 1 456 324 more hits. Works every time.

Scott Gomez, and his 7.5 million say hello.
Never say ' never' , because no GM would pass up on a legitimate sniper if he could make it happen. It's the same reason, he paid more for Cammalleri than other teams.

I can't see Kovulchuck going for too much more than Hossa as a rental.
1-2 young RFA roster players (depending on how good they are), prospect + draft pick.
I guess it depends on how many bidders, but Hossa had multiple too, the extra last minute roster player now known as the tipping bid.

Gonna need more then that.....
It's going to take something like -
Andrei Kostitsyn
Sergei Kostitsyn
Weber
Halak
3 1st rounders
and still I don't think Atlants does it...
