I always loved Kovalchuk, but being UFA the asking price is really high. Don't forget that we only got 4 draft picks this year and it is supposed to be a deep one.
Let's assume that Atlanta is interested by this trade proposal. Would you be willing to give up 2 first round picks and the K bros for a rental we wont be able to sign next year due to salary cap. Plus, chances are he would not even sign here next year.
We are NOT contenders this year. We're not. So why would we trade assets for a half season rental ? So we can finish 8th, 7th or 6th and get wiped out in the first round AGAIN !?
If Atlanta only had to give up what they gave up, for hossa, I just don't see Kovalchuks return being as good as listed in the OPs post. 3 NHLers, 1 prospect, 1 1st?
Seems like overpayment, now I know kovalchuk >>>>>> hossa, but still.
If Kovalchuk becomes available, every team in the NHL will place a phone call. Eklund can say whatever team he wants, it doesn't require much knowledge to say so..
I wouldn't trade the farm for him if he is unsigned, but we would be nuts not to ask!
The only way we get Kovalchuk is if we trade Gomez, Hamrlik, a couple nice prospects and a pick. I know that sounds like even more overpayment then the OPs post but it isn't, it's actually severe underpayment as it would tie them up in cap hell just in order to get two good players lmao. Obviously this deal will never go down tho, as Atlanta's GM probably doesn't want to make the worst trade in NHL history.
Personally though if it weren't for 2010-2011 I'd be happy to keep both the players in question (Hammer/Gomez)

Gomez has no trade value. You couldn't get a 3rd round pick for Gomez. His salary vs point production is just too low.
I can't believe that the majority of you seem to think that even if we manage to land him here as a rental, he will sign with us after that.
Hossa went to the Stanley Cup final and didn't even sign with the Pens..
Imagine Kovalchuk with Montreal....
Most of Habs fans are **** bat insane
That's what I said earlier,if he doesn't come with a contract extension, forget about it.How many teams have made these block buster types of deal and won the cup?Not worth it for a rental,if he would sign 5-6 years then I would really think about it

Extension is the key, but with the cap and everything, it would be quite a puzzle to have him here.
