Of course, the vast majority of deadline deals are for rentals. And rarely do you find a game changing goal scorer and PPQB available that time of year.

Winning the Stanley Cup is why teams will try to acquire him.

BUT the price goes down, if you KNOW he's a rental. And as the price goes down, Sathers package looks better.

and the vast majority of deadline deals are not for bona fide elite 50 goal scorers you can build a francise around.

No it doesn't. Would you rather win the Stanley Cup, or have Ilya signed for 10 years?

I would wager the majority of GMs in the NHL would take the Cup. Adding Ilya to any of the main contenders, even if they lose a Top 6 F and young players, will make them front runners.

Competition will drive the price up, and bear in mind that anyone in the Eastern Conference will have to pay a premium for Ilya as the Thrashers are in the playoff hunt.

This is not a situation where the Rangers can just offer garbage and get what they want, despite what any other teams want to offer.

I can assure you that the Islanders are not getting involved with Kovalchuk. Snow has stated several times he does not deal with players who are potential UFA's after the Smyth deal.

If Kovalchuk gets an offer, it's on July 1st. I think the Islanders are going to be real players for him than.

That "garbage" is giving your team WITH Kovalchuk a serious run. How does that make you feel?

Depressed we are in the middle of an 8 game losing streak that allowed teams like the Rangers to catch us... The Thrashers are still overachieving, and the Rangers are underachieving based on expectations, can't argue that.

Look, the Rangers just do not have any offensive firepower to spare. Other teams do. Throwing massively underperforming guys like Higgins and Rozival into a deal so the salary works for the Rangers is not going to get it done.

Heck, Mason Raymond even sounds like a redneck.
Adding Kovalchuk would be great, but given the cost to acquire him as well as the slim chance they'd be able to get him signed, it's really not worth it for the Canucks. If they're going to trade for a strictly, big name rental player, it will be Scott Niedermayer.

You could drastically narrow down the list of possibilities.

Which teams have enough depth and required assets to make such a trade for a rental???

Which teams are playoff bound.

I don't see bubble playoff teams going all out and giving up a bunch of assets for a rental that could possibly put them over the hump.

I think If Kovalchuk is traded it will be to a contender because no GM on the bubble is going to give up a ton, that would be a huge gamble IMO. It could end up being a great trade but at the same time it could end up being a horrible trade... I just don't see a GM taking the risk based on what it would cost to acquire him.

Thats just the way I see it or I would personally approach the idea.

I think both Wheeler and the Thrashers probably want nothing to do with eachother.

Didn't you just ask about what it would take for Vancouver to get Kovy on the Thrashers board?

For Boston to get him you'd probably be starting out with something like this:

To

LW Ilya Kovalchuk

To :thrashers

G Tuuka Rask
Toronto's 1st Rounder 2010
C Joe Colbourne

And maybe a Sturm or someone might be also thrown in.

That's a good joke, sir.

To Boston
Kovalchuk

To Atlanta
Ryder
Wheeler
Colbourne
Tor 1st
+ a conditional 2011 if he resigns

I agree. You only move top prospects or a guy like Raymond for Kovalchuk if you think you can re-sign him, and given our cap situation I just don't see how that would be possible next year.

Niedermayer makes perfect sense. BC boy who had interest in signing here back in 05, probably in the final season of his career, cup experience and still in the upper echelon of defensemen in the league.

Then again, if Kovalchuk was signed Atlanta wouldn't trade him.

You would have to presume Kovalchuk would be interested with signing with Boston for that trade to go through obviously. Even then, I do admit Boston is giving up a little too much.

This is better than my proposal without a doubt. It would be interested whether Atlanta would take Colbourne or maybe try to pry Rask away from Boston instead. I know they have been having goaltending problems for years, not sure how it has been this year from them.

You Hawks fans should let the Leafs get Kovalchuk. We haven't had a goal scoring champion since the 1930s!

I have been able to confirm four teams that have thrown their hat in so far, though I believe s many as 6 may have. The four that I have confirmed to have made their interest known are Chicago, Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Philadelphia.

I have heard rumblings of Edmonton, Boston, Toronto, the Islanders, and Montreal...

Oh man this was good for a laugh on Monday morning....

Why on Earth would teams not likely to make the playoffs give up huge assets to get the biggest upcomming UFA of the season.

Not to mention several of the teams he has listed are right up against the cap, and there is no way this could happen.

Eklund would have been much better off just listing the top 3 team in each conference.

I don't want Wheeler and don't like him after what he did to Phoenix.

He is not wanted.
