Torts says Ranger players are treated too good by organization
John Tortorella spoke to the media this morning
He was also asked about how convenient the organization makes it on the team.
“Sometimes too good,” he said. “That’s part of the problem. Sometimes too good. That’s something in the short time I’ve been here … I think we take too good care of them sometimes. I’ll leave it at that.
“We’re changing our travel into the Island and Jersey, where it’s not going to be 10 freakin’ limos flying in from all over the place and coming in for a morning skate. We’re leaving the night before the game, on a bus, and going as a team to New Jersey and to the Island from now on. There are so many different things that come into play with people spread out all over the city and Westchester County, that I’m just beginning to understand and trying to get a better handle on it to be more team-conducive in the travel that we have here.”
This petty B.S as you call it, is sometimes the difference between losers and champions. And people like you are the exact reason Torts is saying what he is saying about the fans.
Going in separate cars or going on a bus to an arena that's 30 minutes away? Yeah, that's why we're not winning. There's already a legitimate question as to whether he's lost the players due to their effort level, and now he's treating them like they're children, which isn't going to help any.
EDIT: Oh, and another thing that players hate and isn't going to help any... stop publicly embarrassing the players, you idiot. You want to change the travel arrangements, then do it, you don't have to tell the media. He is pathetic.

Isn't that what the morning skate is for? To have all the players circle up? It's not like they are doing this when they visit Edmonton. I am sure the headaches caused by trying to round everyone to the same bus at MSG the night before a game at NJ or LI is going to outweigh the benefit of the increased "team comraderie". In any case, wouldn't everyone need to take 10 limos to said bus anyways?
As said earlier, this has been the NYR m.o. for years, I am sure this does not contribute to the teams success on way or the other.

well they seem to be acting like children, they are professional athletes and for them to not show effort in a game, especially in division rivalry games!!!! So now we know why, they should travel as a team and spend the night together as a team because that is how you become closer as a team!
you're right they are being treated like children, but it is needed with this squad.
When times get tough, you can always count on John Tortorella to come up with an answer that has nothing to do with hockey and points the finger at his players.
I'm pretty sure the Rangers travel arrangements were the same while we were making the playoffs four years in a row before he showed up.
This is the kind of petty b.s. that players hate and makes them not want to play for a coach like this.
Players will hate Torts because he won't let them take a limo? I want those players off this team, immediately! Torts is a blue collar guy and he's whipping these elitist ***** into shape. Keep it going Torts, teach these cupcakes what an honest day's work is like.
I am totally with Torts on this. You have to change the culture.
I'm not one of those Ranger fans who keeps referring back to Messier, but I will here. It was one of the primary things he changed. He got everyone on the bus as a team. He reminded everyone in the locker room of the great tradition of an Original 6 team. Of the pride that should come with that.
We're all whining about the big contracts, and how we don't see a complete effort every night or even every period from this team, and now we have a coach who points out what he sees as examples of the players being spoiled and we're not onboard with this?
Of course it's the players. They are the ones who have to get it done, and they are the ones who will get the glory.
10 freakin' limos. sheesh
Drive around in a limo all you want on your own time, lord knows you've got the money. But when it's game time, be a team.
I can't believe that some of you are ripping Torts for this and siding with the players on taking 25 separate cars/limos to a Devils game. Shouldn't the team be on the, you know, TEAM BUS bonding before the game? No wonder this team doesn't stick up for each other.
