Rank the #1 picks of the last 10 years

I was wondering, IF we pick up the #1 pick where would that leave us in terms of talent compares to the last 10 years? How about rank the #1 picks in order from 2001 through to 2010? (Hall/Seguin in the mix).

2001-Ilya Kovalchuk-ATL
2002-Rick Nash-CBJ
2003-Marc-Andre Fleury-PIT
2004-Alexander Ovechkin-WAS
2005-Sidney Crosby- PIT
2006-Eric Johnson-STL
2007-Patrick Kane-CHI
2008-Steven Stamkos-TAM
2009-John Tavares-NYI
2010-Hall or Seguin-Your Pick

I realize that the 2010 possible picks have never played an NHL game, just interested to see where everybody would put them.

I was there in Raleigh, sitting a few seats beside Ovechkin when he got drafted. Fun time. Crosby has the cup now. Kovalchuk is a nut. Nash was 'mazin, not so much no mores. Fleury is still unreal. Tavares is the deal, more so than Kane or Stamkos. ?Johnson? is who exactly ? and Hall has yet to play with real men.

Cheers,

Of course, it's just a prediction on guys like Hall/Seg, Johnson, etc. A lot of these guys have a lot more to prove, but if they were all available as 18 year olds, this is how I would take them.

I think it's too early to tell about some of these guys. Tavares may end up being one of the faces of the NHL, same with Johnson and Stamkos. Johnson and Kane are the only Americans on that list and I could the NHL pushing them in terms of marketing, real hard. No one really knows how good Hall will be, he hasn't even been drafted yet, it's a little early to be writing him off as a face of a franchise/nhl or declaring him a star already. That being said, I know we are all just making educated guesses at this point, I'm just saying that there is a lot of hockey to be played before we can really make an accurate list. Let's come back to this in 5 to 10 years, and then we would be able to see a clearer picture.

Flip EJ (was leading his team for scoring for a bit) with Stamkos and maybe Kane with MAF.

I called for Doughty to be taken over Stamkos, too bad the Lightning didn't do it otherwise they would be set on the blueline for years with Hedman and Doughty.

2005-Sidney Crosby- PIT
2004-Alexander Ovechkin-WAS
2001-Ilya Kovalchuk-ATL
2009-John Tavares-NYI
2007-Patrick Kane-CHI
All these players made immediate impacts on their team.
2002-Rick Nash-CBJ
2008-Steven Stamkos-TAM
2010-Hall or Seguin-Your Pick
2006-Eric Johnson-STL
These players took 1 year or so to actually show what they have (it is my prediction about this year's 1st overall
2003-Marc-Andre Fleury-PIT
was a risky 1st overall because its a goalie, which is why i list it last...he only came into his own after about 4 full seasons...that is a long "break even point" to have to endure for a 1st overall pick!

Probably everyone except Crosby and Ovechkin. Nash, Kane, and Stamkos would be hard choices. Definitely over everyone else but it is early to count out Tavares or this years pick.

I think I would easily pick Doughty on my team over Nash and Kane.

This list looks pretty accurate to me. Only chang eI would make is swapping the the 2010 pick with Johnson as Johnson hasn't proven much if anything at the NHL level. As it looks either of those two players will be better than a Johnson although it hard to compare forwards with d-men. Also I would bump Stamkos up above Nash.

big time. Doughty is gonna be a stud IMO, I would of taken him over Stamkos, and I like Stamkos. To me, Doughty is ahead of everyone except Ovechkin and Corsby, I have that big of hopes for the kid. Hedman would also be ahead at least half of that list.

Just a question, why would you take an unproven player (2010 pick) over Johnson? Better yet, why would you pick the potential of Stamkos over the proven ability of Nash (Nash has won major awards in the NHL, Richard Trophy as a 19 year old as an example). I am not picking on your choices I am just wondering why people think the way they do. Eric Johnson is a stud defenceman, same as or better than Drew Doughty (stats wise only). Maybe we as fans spend too much time listening to the hype machines of TSN, Sportsnet etc, instead of building our own decisions.

Just so I don't get in trouble, here is my list
2005 Sydney Crosby
2004 Alex Ovechkin
2002 Rich Nash
2001 Kovalchuk
2006 Eric Johnson
2007 Patrick Kane
2003 MAF
2008 Stamkos
2009 Tavares
2010 ?
After the first 4 stars I would personally take the big stud defenceman. Toughest position to play in the NHL, IMO

I thought I stated pretty clearly why I placed EJ at the bottom. I don't think the kid has proven a whole hell of a lot and that is probably due to his season ending injury last year. But you say he ahs similar stats to Doughty who is a plus 7 with 28 points in 42 games while Johnson is even and has 22 points in 40 games. One thing to remember is that Johnson is a full year older than Doughty. Therefore this is why I think Doughty is quite a bit better than Johnson and why I put Johnson at the bottom of the class.

Might be a stretch to put him under guys who haven't played NHL games but like I said I havn't seen enough of Johnson since entering and tht has to do with his injury last season. Very well could do this list again next year and have a different ranking.

Now as for Nash and being proven yes the kid did put up a rocket richaurd season when he was 19 and hasn't done much since. The guy is supposed to be a leader but hasn't led his team to much of anything. He often seems to be invisible for long stretches too.

Nash is still a fine player but as of right now Kane and Stamkos are showing more promise than Nash. Again the fact that they are doing this at a younger age than Nash is right now makes me believe that they will be the better pick now and in the future.
