Anything on Cam Barker's injury?

Pat Foley thought it was a shoulder last night... he didn't look very good...

Anyone heard anything on this yet? If we're going to be w/out Hammer for a little while, which I would assume we could be if he took a puck to the ear, then losing Barker might force a callup we might not be able to afford.

Thoughts? Updates?

He played after the injury didn't he? I know I saw him out there shortly after he got hurt, but didn't notice if that was his only shift after the injury or not.

Barker played one shift after the injury before retreating to the locker room

No word yet on how serious it is. Don't know what the Hawks are planning if either can't go next game, but I'd be practicing my defensive moves if I was Bryan Bickell

I didn't catch the game last night. Does anyone have the youtube of what happened or at least a summery of the play?

How long is hammer out for? That's the more important question.

I haven't heard anything re: Hammer or Barker. Typical hockey - we won't hear anything until Bickell's recalled at 1 pm tomorrow and Hendry's dressing.

An injury to Barker that puts him on the LTIR would actually help the Hawks cap situation, if it were necessary to help it.

I was about to start a thread inquiring for legitimate opinions on his defensive play and saw this thread. Is he really that brutal in his own zone?

Barker isn't as bad as he's made out to be. The reason he gets so much flak is because he's the weak link on one of the top defensive corps in the league. He's a top 4 defenseman on about 90% of teams.

Barker isn't brutally bad in his own zone.

For the first time in nearly a generation, Blackhawks fans are blessed on the blue line right now. In Duncan Keith, Brent Seabook, Brian Campbell and Niklas Hjalmarsson, the Hawks' top four is as good as there is in hockey IMO. All of these guys skate well and both pairs are a great mix of skaters/offensive-minded players (Keith/Campbell) and a physical banger who cleans up garbage and makes plays that often don't show on a stat sheet (Seabs/Hammer).

Barker was the third overall pick in a pretty good draft and is now slower and not-as-good with the puck as the top 4. At $3M, he's running out of popularity in Chicago.

He could be a solid top-4 defenseman on most other teams in the league, but, again, Chicago is blessed to be loaded on the blue line right now.

[end rational response]

His mistakes always seem to be deal breakers at the worst possible time, which is why I (and many other fans) hate him.

Thanks for the insight. I'm not sure if he'd be top 4 in Buffalo either. He's definitely behind Myers/Tallinder/Lydman and probably working for icetime with Butler/Sekera/Rivet/Montador. Random note, I doubt it, but is Brouwer available?

For the $1M we're paying Brouwer to play so well next to Toews & Kane, he's probably near the bottom of Bowman's list of players to move. Want Andrew Ladd or Tomas Kopecky? We'll take a draft pick and a back of sticks...

Brouwer is not, but if you want Ladd, Fraser or Kopecky, they're all yours.

I imagine Ladd will be traded or just not signed during the off-season. He's alright, but he's invisible a lot of nights and could and will be replaced by one of the many prospects.

Ladd has been solid all year

He is very dependable in his own end and works well with Madden

He will be an RFA this offseason I would imagine the Hawks will see how much he will cost to resign and if he is too high we will move his rights at draft for a pick

I doubt it.

My money says Ladd's gone before the Olympics, maybe as a nice chip to get someone to suck up Sopel's contract.

Look at the lineup. We're going to possibly get Bolland back before the Olympics, and could have Burish back to start March. Who can we most afford to move, who will also bring some value in return, to make room on the roster for those two? Fraser? Doubtful; he's been too good on the PK. Kopecky? Doubtful. He's Hossa's boy and hasn't played that well most of the season. Eager? Doubtful. He's our enforcer. So you move Ladd off the third line and slide Burish onto the 4th line.

Also remember that, when Bolland returns, Ladd's a 4th line guy on the Hawks who might be a 6th or 7th forward on a lot of teams. That's worth a 2nd to a lot of people, and with his contract expiring he's expendable. Burish will be here next year at half the cost.

I'm with stingo; Ladd is on his way out. Given his play this year, the Hawks can't even afford to qualify him. A kid will slot into his place for a little (Beach) or a lot (Bickell) less money and, except for the decrease in dump and chase in the shootout, we won't even notice.

If I'm the Sabres, I take an overpaid 7th/8th defenseman in Sopel if it means I can pick up Ladd as well any and every day of the week.

Sopel is playing more like an overpaid #5/#6 this year.

Personally, I'd like to keep him for the playoffs.

He'd be a 7th/8th in Buffalo, which is what I was getting at. They have 7 NHL d-men already, with Paetsch on waivers and Weber at a +infinity in the A.

Sopel has really impressed me a lot lately. He's been great. I don't think I'm as eager to move him now, as I once was. But if it means clearing salary to bring someone better, or keeping one of the kids, I'm for it.

But Sopel isn't bad. He's playing pretty much up to his contract, I guess.

He was a beast on the PK the other night against, I think, St. Louis.
