This has to mean something...

a. Gerbe or Ennis are getting called up for the long haul to spark the offense/PP
b. a Trade is in the works
c. Another team actually said, we won't even give you a 7th, but if you waive him, we'll make a claim...

Clarke MacArthur for Marek Zidlicky.

Ennis or Gerbe gets called up to take Clarke's spot...

DO IT DARCY

Hecht-Connolly-Pominville
Ennis-Roy-Stafford
Vanek-Kennedy-Grier
Montador-Ellis-Kaleta
x Mair

Tallinder-Myers
Lydman-Rivet
Sekera/Butler-Zidlicky

Or... he's trying to find Paetsch a home at Nate's request.

It also would free up a bit in cap money that they could bank until the deadline. I'm figuring it's Gerbe getting recalled. If he's up, Ruff can bench scoring line wingers who aren't producing on a night-to-night basis without worrying about taking something out of the offense.

Hmm, I'm doubtful there is any deeper meaning to this than when Mair was waived. There's certainly no real reason why they waited till now to do this.

My money is on Paetsch still being a part of this team come Wednesday.

I assume they didn't like having to send Gerbe back down and want him up permanently.

I'm hoping this is tied to straightening out Vanek.

I really don't think anyone is going to claim him at that salary...maybe on the way back up if he goes to Portland. I think this is going to play out just like Mair...no one takes him and we don't send him down.

With Mac struggling we may see a reuniting of Gerbe/Roy/Stafford.

Smart move. His versatility is nice, but he's a man without a spot on this team. If two d-men go down, Weber is getting the call given the season he's having in the AHL. And I'm sure they'd much rather have Gerbe or Ennis in the lineup than Paetsch. If there's a taker, I'm guessing:

Vanek-Kennedy-Grier
Hecht-Connolly-Pommer
Gerbe-Roy-Stafford
Mac-Gaustad-Kaleta (once healthy)
x Ellis, Mair

As Chain mentioned, this also gives them the option of sitting a slumping top-6 player (Staff, Mac) to get them going. I think Gerbe also brings out better play in Roy and Stafford. Seems like there's more of a spark when Nate is on that line.

Or, this may be nothing more than hoping someone will take Paetsch's contracts off their hands.

Mair was a long term veteran who since he wasnt playing was granted an opportunity to play elsewhere. No one else wanted, and now he is back contributing to the team.

Paetsch is a scrap. No one wants. No one is going to claim him. Putting him on waivers is ATLEAST about giving the roster spot to someone else.

If he clears waivers, Im almost positive he will be sent down.

...AND

Paetsch WANTS to be sent down. It's clear the Sabres aren't going to re-sign him, and he's going to be used VERY sparingly, if at all in Buffalo in the 2nd half. In Portland he would probably be on the first PP unit. He'd play 30+ games and IN THE VERY LEAST, would have some film so that he could make his case to other teams next year to rejuvinate his career

Also highly doubtful but Rick Dipietro was recalled by the Isles and many think Biron will be traded in the next few days.

Here is hoping for an improvement to our goal scoring

With Sekera sitting in the 7th slot and Weber playing well again on the farm, I'm not worried from a depth standpoint (which would have been my only concern). It would be great if someone took him, though I have my doubts. Even if he gets sent to Portland on his salary, it clears space. This waiving makes a lot of sense, whereas the Mair waiving made no sense. Mair has played a good number of games and contributed in a very positive way. Paetsch, not so much.

I appreciate Paetsch but I think it's a good move if the idea is to bring up a forward who can make it easier for Ruff to pressbox guys. Bringing Gerbe or Ennis up, or perhaps even Mancari (who would gain less from being in the AHL anyhow).

Sekera is already unjustly riding the pine and Weber is in Portland so depth is ok, and of course they still have Paetsch if he clears.

I doubt there's a trade already but now wouldn't be a bad time to start looking at them, because the deadline is shortly after the Olympic trade freeze comes off.

Credit where it's due. Nice move, even if it's a small one in the grand scheme of things.

This, and the Paille trade, are exactly the kind of things the "old Darcy" wouldn't have done; even last year's version, a la Afinogenov. Good to see he's turning over a new leaf and being somewhat proactive, rather then letting million(s) in cap space fester on the bench or in the press box.

Now if he can actually go out and improve the team at (or before) the deadline, I'll be a happy camper.
