Brooks on Parise

This is from a recent article by Larry Brooks:

"Of the 20 skaters on each squad, Zach Parise is the only American who would crack Team Canada. And what does that tell you other than an entire generation of Americans (including Gomez) following the group that carried the flag from the World Cup championship in 1996 through the Olympic silver medal in 2002 somehow fell off the map?"

Feels kinda good knowing the Rangers fans have to read that.

Do you agree that he is he only one who would make Team Canada? How about Kane, for example?

Oh, nice to see Brooksie not trying to stir up the pot by saying that Parise is underpaid and will bolt the first chance that he gets.

Or was that Everson?

Actually, same thing/no difference.

Conversely, if Mark Stall were from the U.S., he wouldn't even crack the U.S. Olympic squad. And he didn't even make the Canadian sub taxi-taxi squad.

Miller could possibly be there in place of Fleury.

Imagine Parise on a line with Crosby?
That puck cycling would be incredible

The American team is young. We could beat Russia in 2002 because Ovechkin and Malkin (among others) were like 15 or 16, if not younger.

Just like Russia wasn't the greatest team for a stretch, the US won't be now, but come back in a few years when we have experience and when USA hockey grows more from another WJC title (and U17 as well).

Kessel and Komisarek would have made the Canadian squad, if members of Leafs management were in charge of the roster.

Brooks does not have a bad mind for the game. His comments regarding transactions are what are ridiculous.

Kessel maybe (depending on the needs in the top 6) but there's no way Komisarek comes close to the defensive depth on Canada.

But then again, if Burke were running team Canada you never know what he'd do. He'd probably try to give the Russians a second round draft pick for something.

Komisarek shouldn't even have been on USA.

Miller would definitely make it.

Kane would get a look but would be doubtful (too one dimensional).

Stastny and Kesler would get a look for Bergeron's role but would also be long shots.

So yea, basically just Miller and Parise.

Why are we even talking about our players making Team Canada? The US has AMAZING players in their own right. We should be proud of who we have and I honestly think we have a realistic shot at a medal this year. We have Zach Parise, Phil Kessel, Patrick Kane, Paul Stastny, Ryan Miller. This is top level talent. Let's be proud of our guys and stop comparing them to Canada. US, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Russia, and Czech Republic all have world class talent on their team. I really hate the articles that mention how the US team is weak and the talk about who would make Team Canada and whatnot. We may be young but it's not a team of rookies. Canada isn't that old either. Plus Parise and Kane have shown me that they can be leaders and put teams on their backs. I BELIEVE IN USA!!!!

I think Kessler would be a great 4th liner for Canada. He would have shot.

Can he not because of Olympic rules? Because technically when you become an American citizen you have to renounce your previous citzenship to the other country. So in America's eyes, he's not Canadian anymore.

He can't because he already as played for Canada in the Olympics. Can't switch sides.

And about that second part, with a lot of countries you can have dual-citizenship. I'm sure he does. Two passports, and only taxes in the country that is the source of income, plus more parental rights over his ex-wife, who AFAIK is Canadian only.

Weird thing with that is that when I took my citizenship exam a few weeks ago, at the interview the officer asked "Do you renounce all affinities to other countriesblabla...). And I said, "well, I don't have to do that, I can have dual citizenship". WRONG answer. : The guy almost closed my application and kicked me out. But he gave me one more chance, asked again, and this time I said yes and then it was all fine.

So, I think from the U.S. side, officially, you're supposed to throw away every other passport that you have. For example, if I enter the U.S. with my Swedish passport, they will arrest me. But I guess I could go to compete in the olympics for Sweden (I wish)

Nothing makes sense.

Yup this is true. The weird thing is though that it's ok the other way around with certain countries. For example, I want to get my Irish citizenship because I can since my grandfather is from the island. I can own land and work in the EU without needing a visa or anything. And I can still hold my US citizenship.
