Of course, Brodeur would have been a HOF goalie if he hadn't played on the Devils. Players with his talent level shine no matter where they play.

Would he have the records he does had he not played on the Devils? Probably not. The Devils in their heyday had a perfect storm-esque combination of a defensive system, committed two-way forwards, and an excellent core of defensemen. In short, all the elements necessary for an elite goaltender to maximize his talent.
Basically how I feel.. Its not a knock against him hes clearly imo the best goaltender Ive ever witnessed. probably ever to lace them up.

Change one thing change everything, it's impossible to say.

But for the sake of argument, I think he would be. The dude has made some amazing saves throughout is career.

And for the defensive shell of a system he plays in he faces 25 shots per game, not too easy but not so difficult.

So my take, def HOF goalie no doubt there, but it'd be interesting where he fell amongst the best goalies in the NHL without the Devils.

It's not like it's only Rangers and Pens fans who start these discussions. This arguement has been going on for a long, long time.

Is there even really a Pens-Devils rivalry?

Note how Marty was STILL a fantastic goaltender without Lemaire behind the bench.

The fact that JL is back is just icing on the cake and a way to improve the pre-existing greatness this Devils franchise already omits.

I'll allow this: would Brodeur have the records he has now if he'd been drafted by, say, Florida? No. Of course not. Only the combination of the combined excellence of a team with the excellence of its goalie over an unprecedented length of time has allowed him to shatter the records and set marks that will be well nigh impossible to break.

But Florida would have at least one championship in the last twenty years.

There was always a Divisional Rivalry, but it seems to be brewing even more this year due to New Jersey's constant domination of the SC Champs.

I always thought the Penguins were really the odd-man out when it comes to the division, only really having a rivalry with the Flyers...

So who is going to make the thread..."Would Roy be a HOF Goalie Without the Canadiens/Avalanche?"

I can't believe the lengths people go to so they can hate on the Devils and Brodeur

Never suggested otherwise.

Petty jealousy is not restricted to any particular fanbases.

And what "argument"? In the creative minds of a few here, perhaps. Not elsewhere.

You are correct to a certain extent, especially considering the fact that the Devils, Rangers, Flyers, and Islanders are all within a 100-mile radius, while Pittsburgh is clear on the other end of Pennsylvania.

There is no "hatred" between the teams, I'd say... It's more of a healthy, competitive rivalry due to fact that these teams meet six times a season and are indisputably two of the best teams in the NHL right now.

Hell, there are out-of-division teams that the Devils have a more intense rivalry with at the moment, most notably, our playoff rivalry with Carolina.

The Devils do not have a very strong rivalry with the Penguins yet, because the two teams have not met often in the playoffs. The rivalries with the Flyers, Rangers, and former Whalers are much stronger.

But considering the way both teams are playing this year, it may happen. As in politics as in hockey, superpowers must always eventually come into conflict.

Well, I think that the difference is clear; Roy didn't play under a magical trap his whole career.

And as per the rivalry thing... that's what I thought, it just struck me as an odd remark to say Rangers and Pens instead of, say, Rangers and Flyers.

Edit: @Ronnie Bass: Sorry for not making my sarcasm more clear.

Yes, but Brodeur is very, very lucky to have played in Jersey. It has padded his stats a lot imo.

I don't consider him the best goalie ever.

I was getting ready to get pissed...

But then I read it as "Six fans in Newark."

Actually, not counting the college kids who board in Newark, your guess of six fans actually within the city limits of Newark, New Jersey is probably pretty accurate.

The trap is not "magical". It requires all the right components to be fully effective. See: New Jersey Devils, 1995-2003.

And as for the 6 fans comment, I suggest you do some research.

No matter what, this team will probably never earn the respect it deserves.

I'd be SHOCKED if I see a Devils thread in the future that isn't somehow related to the "Trap", boring hockey, or Brodeur being a product of the Devils system.

I can't remember the last time a Devils related thread on the main board wasn't a flame fest.

Only the combination of the combined excellence of a team with the excellence can do it

Sort of agree, but Joseph had better reactions and Brodeur has better mobility, the the level of skill is roughly equal. Its funny that you say Joseph though because he is a borderline for making the hall of fame.

Pens Rangers games have been pretty heated since the 08 playoffs with the home teams pretty much dominating.
