"From what I can see in these last two days, he's a cool customer. It's pretty easy to see that some of the younger folks might be exuberant around his leadership style. It's great to promote from within, it's great to have someone who saw a lot of our guys grow up in the organization."
Folks sure don't give Payne much chance to get things going a bit better. The Blues sit 4th worst in the league right now, but its a pretty tight clump of teams in the east. I'd prefer to enjoy another month of games and the Olympics before worrying at all about the draft.
They're 12 points from the playoffs as of today. Not very likely....but its also not very likely (in my opinion) that the Blues don't improve a little bit in the 2nd half of the season over the first half (and move up to the 10-14th pick range). If they want a top 5 pick, they'll have to trade to obtain the spot...and that kind if is against the strength of Jarmo's scouting program, which is to find value that gets passed by.
I'd like to see the Blues pick up another amazing star talent in the draft too, but today I'm a lot more interested in watching Payne's regime start its first winning streak.
It was bad timing that the first two games were arguably against the two best teams in the West. I hoped for more against Anaheim. I think tonight's game is winnable, and I expect to see a hungry Blues team playing a whale of a game.
