Why would it be to late to trade him?

Because he had a monster season last season and his value was probably at an all-time high during the summer? His injuries and less than awesome play this season will have likely dropped his value somewhat.

From Chris Botta at Fanhouse (former Isles VP of Media Relations):

According to a FanHouse survey of 10 general managers and assistant GMs, only the Carolina Hurricanes and Edmonton Oilers have begun trade discussions with their counterparts for several roster players.

Edmonton, last and 16 points out of eighth place in the West, does not have any significant rentals to trade, but will consider cutting ties with skilled but regressing youngsters like Robert Nilsson and Andrew Cogliano. Scoring defenseman Sheldon Souray is also available, but a tough sell with two more years and $10 million left on his contract after this season.

By the way, wouldn't the drafting of a Canadian phenom like Taylor Hall make it all worthwhile for the Oilers to not try and win too much the rest of the way?

Yeah, well, thought it was interesting to hear those names coming from league GM's instead of HF Boards.

Exactly thanks man. It's like the people on here who want to say how ****** Moreau is but then make up proposals for him like other NHL GM's don't see this kind of player and all they see is Moreau from the '06 playoffs and prior.

Also with regards to Souray I think the price tag is a bigger issue than the timing. I guess the two can tie together. But if Souray was making a cap hit of less than 5 I think he could be moved in a heart beat.

The guy can't even do basic math...... There are two years remaining at $4.5 million per season.....

No, I don't want to trade Souray but I'm not sure there is a choice. How would he fit in a rebuild at his age?

What a bush league. Emery would have fit in just nicely in that mess.

That doesn't matter. The cap hit stays the same even if he's traded.

by leading the team into playoffs in 2011-2012 as the team captain

Tambo needs to get Gilbert, Horcoff, Khabibulin and Staios contacts off our books..
( by trading them for overpaid guys who are pending UFAs in 2010 or in 2011)

We can make a serious splash in 2yrs with guys like Visnovsky,Souray,Smid,Perty on D and Penner, Hemsky, Gagner, Pajaarvi, Eberle, (top 3 pick this yr), Brule, Jacques etc at forward. (guys like Lander, Nash, Hartikainen, Omark might also pan out)

That David Staples article was stupid to me. First of all he is signed when he is what 31 so that is already over that 29 he was talking about. Then his first year he gets injuried, in season two he plays well. Going into season 3 the team thought about making the playoffs so why would you move him in the off-season, now we are out so we think about it.

Granted I preferred to move him or Lubo in the off-season it just wasn't realistic with team expectations. Now it is realistic so lets see what happens.

Staples has criticized the signing of Souray since the day he got signed. I don't understand Staples hatred towards Souray.

I understand it to some degree, but to go on and say it is too late because he is over 29 really doesn't make that much sense. Considering he was 31 when signed.
