.......er ..... when you put it that way, I think I will retract that statement. Would you feel better if I said, "I am going to have to beat the crap out of you?" I like that better. No offense intended by the former retracted statement.

I would definitely prefer this over the previous "act."

But don't forget (and I am not sure if you followed this saga), people in tracksuits are not to be messed with.

I wouldn't. I think it's a combination of losing the C and the fact that it's a contract year. It's pretty typical that players will have some of their best seasons during contract years. But also I remember the Kenny Jonsson situation on Long Island back in the late 90's when I think of Marleau right now. Even though Kenny stepped down, I would still point to the fact that his skills noticeably suffered when he was captain. I believe he even came out and said it was a difficult burden to bare for him.

With Marleau it's hard to tell if his skills diminished over what they could have been since he was still making his way up when he was given the captaincy. Feasibly he could be a player that can battle for the Rocket Richard every season, but was held down by his leadership responsibilities. When he was drafted his potential was unlimited, so a RR season from him wouldn't be a shock I'd think.

I was never a huge Blake fan, but this season he has just been awful, and it leads me to believe that the Sharks captaincy is a curse. Thus, I propose that Corey Perry be named the new captain of the San Jose Sharks.

No, I wouldn't give it back to him if for no other reason than just his reply to Drew's question:

Quote:
Patty's now well rehearsed reply is, "No, I don't think so. If the team wanted me to be Captain again, I would take it."
That's always what it is. "I don't want this." "Someone else should be captain." "If they want me to do it, I will."

I've never once heard the words, "I want to be the captain of this team," pass through the lips of Patrick Marleau.

I've heard that from Boyle. THAT is the kind of attitude and desire I want in a team captain. Someone who leads because they want to.....not just because someone else told them to, or assigned that responsibility to them

marleau is great because hes coming into his prime and has good chemistry with thornton not because its his contract year. last year he was in the race with the top goal scorers before he got hurt and that wasnt a contract year either

Blake's been awful as a player, but from a leadership standpoint how do you know?

I will say that after that 6 or so game winless streak earlier in the season, Blake came out and said that the lazy, passionless play from the last half of last season was starting to show again and that it needed to be fixed; the Sharks then won 8 in a row.

Spot on.

Let Patty keep ripping it up without the extra burden of something he really doesn't want anyway, and give it to Boyle who thrives under that pressure and has as much heart as anyone in this league.

Absolutely No.

He's absolutely playing so much more at ease without the pressures of the "C" on his jersey.

I think it's completely true. It simply true that a captainship is extra pressure. And unless you thrive under that kind of pressure, which we have no evidence that Patty is that kind of person, you will be playing better without the captainship.

Though whether or not that is the whole reason (i don't think it is, too easy), is not what it seemed to me you're arguing. I could be wrong, in which case, carry on.

There is no pressure in the regular season.

Marleau scored almost 40 with a C on his sweater - he didn't change that much.

I still think Boyle should be captain. Marleau definitely deserves an A though.

He looks more of a Captain out there than Blake does, but I don't know what goes on in the locker room to say other wise...

Blake will be on another team next year or more probably retired. It opens up a spot for a new Captain. WRT the way its awarded, it seems to have evolved to more Management driven that locker room driven, though its pretty clear the men in the locker room have a say. But they didn't vote Patty off as Captain. Blake seems to me to be a choice led by Doug Wilson, but I am guessing a little.

I dunno if he's ever said that explicitly, but in the post-season interviews last year, wasn't he talking about how he wanted to take leadership positions, but it's hard as "The New Guy" to take that kind of control.

Sure it is true. For the past few seasons, he, like the rest of us, heard over and over in the media if this was his team or Joe's team. Now he could care less. He is just a part of the team. Every hockey fan knows that a highly rated captain has extra pressure on his shoulders. It's only natural in the game.

I do remember hearing him saying almost exactly that sometime in the offseason, but too long ago to remember exactly when.

I say no to giving Patty back the C, there's no reason too, that would just be a mess for all kinds of reasons. Boyle should/probably will get it (although I like the Nichol idea).

Of course, knowing DW, Blake will get a 2.5 mil contract and will be back as captain again...
