Matt Stajan to Calgary

He's a UFA after this season and for a young guy Burke doesn't seem to be in a hurry to sign him, is he not wanted? Admittedly I don't watch the Leafs a lot (obvious reasons ) but he might just fit in with the Flames. What would it take?

Underpayment from Calgary and we would need to move a roster player to fit Stajan into the lineup, how about something built around Moss? big guy who jams the net for garbage goals (20 last year)

Nonis said that no contract talks would begin with any of Toronto's free agents until the 50 game mark, so there's not really any significance to him not being re-signed yet.

My mistake,... so in 3 games/next week he'll be signed? Please!! It doesn't work that way. If the team likes the player they try to sign him, If Nonis/Burke want to play "the show me this season first game" the player will walk and say FU i don't want any part of your BS.

And lets be perfectly clear about Nonis, he doesn't say a damn thing unless the voice string is pulled by Burke first.

Kris Chucko is David Moss.

Chucko would become a 40 point player playing with Kessel.

Moss is 2 years older than Stajan, but has a career high of 39 points. Chucko doesn't interest me either.

I would rather re-sign Stajan, or send him off for something like Boyd and a 2nd.

Realistically, it all depends on Burke's opinion of Stajan, and the salary Stajan is demanding.

Given our lack of quality pivots and Stajan's generally good attitude, you'd think Burke would want to re-sign him...but Stajan has in the past held out a long time on negotiations, and this was before his recent decent point totals. So I could see Stajan being dealt, and I'd hope, if he wasn't going to be signed, Burke would grab a 2nd round pick. I'd rather that than settle for more depth players we already have.

No offence but i dont think Chucko, a 3rd and a 7th would be enough for the Leafs..

Its either the Leafs get a 2nd round pick in 2010 or a prospect that is worth a 2nd rounder. Backlund, Erixon, Aulie and Nemisz are probably all worth at least a 1st rounder. I am sure Burke will pick up a goalie in the off-season so Irving wont fit in either.

But since Calgary does not have a 2nd round pick in 2010 or 2011. So i doubt Calgary and Toronto can make a deal for Stajan.

So I can either believe you or a guy who is actually in charge of the re-signing process.

I think I'll believe Nonis.

This is all untrue, every last bit of it. The Leafs haven't negotiated with any upcoming free agents yet, and yes, they are due to start within a week or two. I think at the start of January Burke said it would be about three weeks away. That said, I doubt there's much worry in Leafs management over whether our free agents walk away, there's really nobody worth keeping unless they take a discount. Ponikarovsky, maybe.

As far as Nonis goes, the guy traded for Roberto Luongo on his own. He's a pro, and I'd wager that there isn't a single move Burke makes as GM of the Leafs that Nonis isn't a party to.

Burke is a hard one to read and the only tipping of a hat he has done to wards our FAs is to state that there are a couple of them he is interested in talking to.

But if last year is any indication of what BB is all about. He will not be scared out of or pushed by the BOG, in what he sees as the players $ worth or term, unlike JFJ.

If Stajan can't be moved as part of a bigger deal, Boyd and 3rd would do the trick in my books

Tempting....VERY VERY tempting but I don't see Sutter giving up Irving as Kipper is getting older.

That's just way too much money tied into the back end IMO. One #### of a d core but it would impeed your progress moving forward.
