Matt Cullen and Marek Zidlicky to Buffalo

After much thought, these two are the two players I think Buffalo has the most realistic chance at acquiring at the deadline and are the best options available for what we need. So, what would it take to acquire each of them? We have picks/prospects to part with but we would most likely have to dump one or even two of our D-men while taking Zidlicky back so we'd have to move at least one roster player as well.

I could hear Jeanerette calling Zidlicky's name. Would Butler and a 2nd get it done.

Well what I know of Butler, I'd make this deal in a second. Even if the pick was lower/conditional it would probably work.

Zidlicky would look good with the Sabres, I hope they can pull this deal off.

I would instantly do:

To Buffalo

Marek Zidlicky

To Minnesota

Chris Butler
3rd Round Pick

Buffalo gets a much needed PP QB. Plus, he's a veteran with a right-handed shot, and Lindy loves the righties.

Minnesota gets Butler who can be helpful to their defense core in the future plus a pick which helps for the future too for one of their best upcoming UFAs. Zidlicky doesn't walk away for nothing in the summer assuming Minnesota is out of the playoff race. I swapped the 2nd for a 3rd since Butler is still very young and had a decent rookie year and might just be going through a sophomore slump at the moment.

I'm just assuming. There are still almost two months until deadline day but assuming he doesn't resign, I'd say Minnesota could get a nice return for him and they would be stupid not to at least try if they see that they aren't going anywhere in contract talks.

Minnesota really doesn't need a defensive prospect, and the 3rd isn't nearly enough. Negotiations start at a 2nd.

I'd gladly be interested in that package but what does Carolina need? Anything prospect-wise? We might be able to give a prospect and/or roster player up and it is likely we would have to send back a roster D-man if Corvo is coming here. Lydman might have to go the other way as an upcoming UFA. He would just be a salary dump and he would clear a roster spot up.

Sabres fans are giving up on Butler too quick.

He's going to be a top 4 d-man for years to come.

Well put Doak. Butler isn't going out the door for a rental.

No reason to trade a good young guy when you don't have to.

Zidlicky could probably be had for a 2nd, a salary dump (Lydman), and a decent prospect (Gogulla, Schiestel, Brennan, Byron, something like that)

Except Butler isn't really a prospect, he's an NHL d-man. Scandella/Cuma/Noreau/Falk will all be in Houston next year, leaving us with 3 NHL d-men currently signed for next season.

I don't see why the Canes would take Lydman back as a main piece. Corvo is a UFA as well so it's not his contract would hinder us. I'm really good at figuring out picks to even things out and I don't know much about the Sabres prospect pool other than the likely untouchable ones.

i'd totally take that deal. I don't think Fletcher would, though...Richards seems to really love him some Zidlicky for some reason. It would help if the Wild had a second PP QB but right now he's the only game in town, and we're pretty close to the playoffs--selling everyone of use this season would be just admitting defeat.

The Olympic roster freeze is 4 weeks away from yesterday. The deadline is 3 days after the gold medal game. Some teams won't play a game before the deadline. There is less time than you think.

Butler + 2nd is way too much for Zidlicky. Heck I was coming here to suggest just a 2nd for Zidlicky. Way to negotiate, Sabre fans.

It's actually closer to six weeks, not counting the two-week roster freeze for the Olympics (which I'm assuming negotiations can continue during, but no trades can be made officially). The season is starting to wind down quickly.

I like Zidlicky, but I wouldn't give up too much for him.

Wow, I didn't realize but it is closer than I thought.
