Kovalchuk or Marleau?

Negatives and Positives in signing either one in the offseason

Kovalchuk 9-9.5 Mil for 6+ Years
+ Obviously adds an elite sniper to our top line

+ Brings a superstar name to LA

- Will command a high dollar long-term contract that could hinder signing future players/prospects Simmonds/Bernier/Moller/Hickey.

- Not known for being a strong defensive player and may effect his play under Murrays system, DL tends to gravitate to more two-way players as his interested in Hossa last season.

Marleau 6.5 Mil for 2+ Years
+ Give us a legitimate #1/2 Center and be able to move Stoll to either the 3rd line center or 2nd line wing.

+ Will not command as much money as Kovalchuk and term would be shorter giving us more flexibility later on for Schenn to develop and eventually move into the #2 center spot.

+ Provides more versatility since he can play either center and wing

- Has not proven himself in the playoffs but without being the captain has thrived this season and may carry over into the playoffs

Both provide added to speed to the lineup and a legitimate scoring threat.

Me personally I go after Marleau this offseason.

Smyth - Kopitar - Williams
Stoll - Marleau - Brown
Parse - Handzus - Simmonds
Clune - Richardson - Moller
Segal/Westgarth

Thoughts....??

I like them both so its all a matter of timing or a matter of which one may sign with us. I wouold try everything to trade for Kovalchuk this year as long as a long term contract came with him. He is one guy I would give a Hossa type contract to.

Once off season hits there are 29 other teams to compete for a UFA Kovalchuk. Not many teams could compete with a trade package we could offer.

Marleau is doing awesome and would be a great fit to this team. We would not give up prospects or team players for him, that is if he wants to sign here.

Either way I would be estatic with either.

Beggars can't be choosers. I'd be happy with either one as any one of the two would make the team better.

At that price, I don't see why he just doesn't stick around in San Jose. Given that he's on pace for a career year, you'd figure he'd want to break the bank with a huge contract both in terms of money and length.

Marleau's most productive years have come on LW, not coincidentally with Joe Thornton as his center. If hypothetically he were to play for the Kings, I imagine he'd stay at LW and Stoll/Handzus would continue at center.

It's been a bit magnified given San Jose's early exits. He's had reasonable production in the playoffs aside from last year. He just hasn't taken over outside of 2006 against Nashville.

Realistically I'd expect the Sharks to offer him a Hossa-esque deal, ie long deal which drags down the cap hit. Unless Marleau harbors ill will from being stripped of the captaincy, I'd be surprised to see him leave after being with the team since 1997.

I'd like Marleau and I'd have Marleau center the top line. He's proven he can be a number 1 center. Move Kopi to the 2nd line and then he may be consistant for the whole year. This would allow Kopi not to play against the other teams top shut down dmen and checking line.

Smyth Marleau Williams
Stoll Kopitar Brown
Frolov/Richardson Handzus Simmonds

Not a bad top 9

Just seems like a good time to go after Marleau in the offseason. I guess 4 years+ is possible since he can play wing/center. Seems like a good fit.

Kovalchuk better be plan A and Marleau can be a plan B. Marleau is a product of his line, while Kovalchuk is his line.

This is the bottom line right here. Kovalchuk is the NHL version of Macgyver. Give him a paper clip and a rubber band and he will find a way to score 40 goals. Marleau, on the other hand, is now only finding himself on pace to score 40 goals for the first time in his career after playing with the league's #1 playmaker for 5 years.

And another 50 goal scorer on the wing opposite Marleau. That is a huge reason Marleau is getting a ton of space on the ice to use his speed.

Just like Gaborik last offseason. Just like Hossa the offseason before that. Just like Drury the offseason before that.

A free agent being a good fit and actually being able to come to terms with a free agent are two completely different things. I still think there's a good chance that Marleau never hits the open market.

Marleau probably has a better chance of hitting the open market than Kovalchuk does.

Let's not forget about how much DL likes his old players. Marleau is my choice.

My Top 9:
Smyth-Marleau-Williams
Frolov-Kopitar-Brown
Richardson-Handzus-Simmonds

I could also think that Stoll and Frolov would be a good trade combo IMO.

I'd love either obviously.

But I really want Kovy. I know there will be cap implications and he's more of a pure scorer than an all around guy like Marleau but I'd just really like to see a superstar of his caliber in an kings jersey.

either would be great! But Marleau being a left hand shot and maybe playing on the wing with stoll and Brown or Simmonds could make for a solid second line.

Guys, Marleau is not going anywhere. The ONLY reason there was even an inkling of possibility that he would leave San Jose was because some fans were calling for his head after the playoffs. Then they cooled down, Wilson stripped him of the C but didn't trade him, and now he's on pace for over 50 goals. He loves San Jose and they love him.
