Why can't this team take a face-off?

Every year we get worse in the dot. This year it's nothing short of incredible. We're dead last in the league and we're not even close to the 29th team. It's downright alarming.

I know our centres are weak and this a key aspect. Is this Trottier's department?

Even when team plays well, momentum is lost in the dot. Maybe it's time to just coach based on losing face-offs?

I suppose it's hard to quantify but there's little doubt face-offs, and lack of success, has killed us since Gaustad left town. Even when he was there, we were't that good outside of the goose.

Because the only (regular) center above 50% is back to looking like he needs a couple days to adjust to playing Foligno's wing. While Ennis' 34.5% is apparently, by law, a lock for 1C, and Girgensons is getting pre-maturely worn down trying to be all things for all people to make up for the top six mess...

In all fairness they are taking a faceoff.

In most cases they just stand there without any effort to win it. Barely a twitch. This is very true of Ennis.

Oh, they can take plenty. They just can't win them!

Reinhart is 24.2% at the dot. Ennis 35.5% (38.7% last season).

Reinhart should improve his upper body strength, while Ennis probably shouldn't be taking face-offs at all.

Girgensons has slightly improved since the last season, but still is below average (43.8%). He was doing pretty good until the away trip to California, though.

Reinhart at least has a track record of being good on draws vs. his peers, so I think when he adds strength his sense of timing will make him an above-average faceoff man. Grigorenko was above 50% last year and has been strong against his peers as well. You'd have to think in time Girgensons will be at least average. So all told that group should be solid. Ennis is just brutal and will never not be at this rate, but on the bright side he shouldn't be a center for us long-term anyhow.

the Sabres finished 27th in faceoffs the last time they made the playoffs. There's no way they actually finish as low as they are right now. There will be the same 8-10% gap between 1-30 that there always is.

This is like concern 9000 for them right now. It's not the reason they're losing.

Because our centers are mostly young (Reinhart, Girgensons) or aren't real centers (Ennis, Foligno, arguably Hodgson should be a winger too). We'll get better once we get some real centers, and the guys we have get more experienced/practiced at draws.

Yeah, I know, even when they were ok, team lost a lot drawers. It's like team can't see importance. They're finishing 30 th on drawers this year -- they are very far behind. 4 percentage points behind 29th team!

Still at 41% for the year. We remain not even close to number 29. It's almost comical.
