Interest in Alexander Svitov

Alexander Svitov, drafted 3rd overall in 2001, is presently playing in the KHL, but his contract is expiring at the end of this season. He's big 6'3, 245, and he's not afraid to drop the gloves. He might look good on the Oilers. Matheson mentions that the Oilers are "sniffing around" him:

Any interest in this guy?

The Oilers may be sniffing around former Tampa Bay Lightning centre Alexander Svitov, a big, aggressive player, but he makes a big buck in the Kontinental League.
Exactly what we need right now. A big salary!

Anyone know what he's making?

edit
On August 17, 2007, Svitov signed a three-year contract with Avangard Omsk, after signing a two-year contract with the Blue Jackets on July 2.

Not a good sign.

Mercenary, for sure; however, I'm all for turning over all unturned stones. The guy has the physical attributes this team badly needs, but I don't know what it would take to sign him.

Think his contract with Columbus might still be in effect(same as Radulov with Nashville).

If not, it would be a decent pickup if he actually wanted to play here. Seem to remember he was making some real progress as a strong 3rd line center before he bolted to the KHL.

I think he would be a UFA.

Ragss posted that he had signed
a 2-year-deal with the Jackets back
in August of '07, meaning that contract is done. UFA eligible now.

I think this is a good sign. Maybe not Svitov exactly but the fact that Edmonton is exploring every option possible.

Hopefully we can sign a couple stud NCAA players and bring over a goalie with boom bust potential from Europe for like 500k.

i wouldnt mind him as a fourth line center. he'd probably blow but his size is intriguing.

He makes big time dollars in the KHL... why would he come back to North America?

He may be willing to drop the gloves but only when it's against guys half his size. His fight card includes names like Park, Keith, Kesler and Brown.

I recall that Svitov was billed as being a guy who would develop into a big, strong, mean, nasty guy with a bad temper who was just miserable to play against.

I'm not sure we could put up with somebody like that. He sounds like the Anti-Horcoff.

I think because he ran out on his NHL deal that it still holds value. Radulov is the most recent that this applies to and Yashin is another when he decided not to play some years ago.

Only way I see it not being valid is if he worked out a deal with CBJ that allowed him to go there.

This falls into the catagory of how short some people memories are--Svitov is out of the league for a reason--he had problems on and off the ice and all indications is that he is happier back home. And for those who suggested he would look good on the 4th line---he is getting big bucks and top minutes in russia and he will sign a dirt contract in edmonton and get 4th line minutes--do the math on that and get back to me.

One of the big problems with Svitov was his ability to play at the NHL level--while his height is good and he can be physical--he can not keep it up and his foot speed is not what you want..]

btw

for those who aren't paying attention--the interest in this guy started due to the fact he started the brawl in the khl

Ahh, I was just going to reply to him playing small, and I've see you already changed it. Good, I was wondering if we were talking about two different players or something.

My wording was forced and I changed it--he is big--but had a nasty habit of playing small
