Let's hope that the organization's patience is rewarded. The time table for Johnson to become a complete defenseman seems to match the time table for the team to become legit contenders.

Do we regret Gleason and Belanger for Johnson?

Yup, but at the same time, if DL had been in charge at that draft there's no way Boyle would have ever been a King.

It's a bit early to ask that right now.

Not really because of lot of others have said it as well. He was given all the freedom he wanted by Berenson and didnt actually learn and improve hsi defense until he got to the NHL.

funny how people are making fun of the Boston comment but completely misread the "all things being equal" part.

I'm curious, forget legality, would it truly bother you to have someone post a chunk of the article here?

I'm pretty sure a guy who's been watching hockey players develop for the better part of 20 years can tell if a hockey program develops players properly.

Jack was a terrible hockey player at UM.

Sincerely,
Jack Johnson's unanimous First Team All-American selection

Is this chunk too big?

“Michigan is the worst.” Lombardi added. “For hockey people, if you’ve got a choice between a kid—all things being equal—one’s going to Michigan and one’s going to Boston University, you all want your player [going to Boston University]. Michigan’s players—[head coach] Red [Berenson] doesn’t coach. It’s ‘do what you want.’ He gets the best players in the country.”

I don't think he was talking about his skills as a player, which he praised. He was talking about his reads and defensive play in his own end. And as you can plainly see since turning pro, Jack has trouble with these basic elements.

What was said is he didnt get the coaching he should have and is now learning the intricacies of playing D at a high level. He was allowed to do what he wanted instead of learning to play the game and got by by talent.

Could you please explain why you think it's garbage? I thought Gann did a great job on the interview and got some really interesting stuff out of Lombardi, but I want to know why you disagree with Lombardi (or with Gann if you think he did a poor job).

Also, that aside, Gann I just want to say that I enjoyed all four sections of the interview with Dean and hope you keep doing a great job. Please keep it up.

Thanks,

T2M

Red Berenson can and does coach, and I think DL's Canadian bias just got the better of him. Honestly, to slap a coach with that much experience seems a bit classless. Maybe it was off the cuff, but DL rarely says anything that isn't thought out.

Wow, just WOW!
