Just kind of an idea to kick around-what kind of move, be realistic, would you like to see the Flyers make before the trade deadline?

Granted, they are somewhat limited, but I think it'd be interesting to see what others would do wearing Holmgren's hat.

Depending on the extent of Parent and Syvret's injuries, I'd like to see the Flyers pick up a 4/5/6 defenseman who is dependable enough to step in and spell off Timonen/Pronger/Carle before and into playoffs.

In the "really want, really need, but not likely to happen", I'd like another goalie. A real goalie who can tandem with Emery or be a good, dependable backup.

Edit: Or Phish's response.

I think we have good enough forwards to compete with anyone.

I'd like to have a #4 or 5 defenseman though.

Is it sad that my hope is to simply avoid royally screwing the salary cap for next season?

Not at all. We really do have all the pieces we can comfortably acquire.

Yep, and I have zero faith that Holmgren won't do something bizarre.

The shame of it all is that prior to the Jones stupidity, we would have been well positioned to acquire a role player.

Yep.

That's still my biggest issue with Holmgren, he doesn't seem to learn from past mistakes. Did he really think nobody'd take a shot at Jones on recall?

I hate deadline deals. I say we do nothing. We already traded away a huge chunk of our future for Pronger. Not many picks to deal, not many prospects left on the farm, not much cap room. All we have to deal are young roster players. Coburn might go, but he wont get us much at the deadline. Giroux and JVR might get something of value, but I think we need more players like that, not fewer.

"What can you do?"

I have no idea what was going through his head. Prior to that move I thought he was a weak salary cap GM. After that move, I now think he's just an idiot.

If he'd bother to show up after waiving Jones and read around here he would have seen a long conversation about that whole situation with an almost unanimous consensus that calling him up with be disastrous; Jones was gone from our lives not because there wouldn't be a moment they might want him, but because it would be stupid to risk it.

I'm at a loss...the cap space we had would easily have been an extra defenseman (to push Bartulis off the back for the playoffs), or a bottom 6 forward. But alas.

Parent might be out for a season. Syvret had a good 10 games run (thats about it) but injured, Bart very up and down sometimes scary bad, TKO may get better (lets be honest, he was out for 14 games) but he will never be that good.

Ideally getting top 4 d-men. In reality we will probably get some useless chump like Modry.

Maybe we will claim someone, like Lukovich? We do not have cap room thanks to Homer and Jones and we do not have any picks.

In Lavi and his system we trust. Lets keep our fingers crossed that we are healthy and Coburn must step up. .

I'd say try to grab a defensemen. However, that may be tough. If we don't do anything, I'm perfectly fine with that.

I'd like us to put in a legit bid for Kovalchuck.... Gagne for Kovalchuck straight up sounds good to me

EDIT:
...throw in some prospects like Maroon, Nodl, Ross, etc arent doing jack rotting in the AHL
..maybe we could steal Salmela from them in the deal.. we can always use another Fin defender !

I would've absolutely loved to go after Whitney with that cap space.

Aside from this being hilarious, I think it makes sense.

So does adding a defender.

But what makes sense won't happen because we don't have cents to spend.

I wouldn't mind a d-man, but we can't realistically give up assets right now.

Honestly, something like Parent + Matsumoto for Downie would not bother me in the least right now.

He'd fill in very nicely as our 9th forward.

Unless they determine he has chronic injury problems, this trade makes no sense.

On a dollar to performance ratio, Parent is going to be one of the top-3 guys at this club for a very long time.

Before we do any of that, Homer needs to slip LA a fiver and tell them to send Jones down and get him off our cap.
