The main reason is always the other things that Mess brought to the table, too.
His physical game and defense throughout his whole career are why he gets the nod. Messier could've been completely offensive and put up 160 points a year if he felt like it, but his game was never about that.
I also feel that if he never went to Vancouver, this wouldn't even be a debate. He came off as a real POS during his time there and it skews a lot of opinions.
Dude is a ******, no doubt about it. One of my least favorite people to play the game. But he was a hell of a player, that's for damn sure.

But Messier was a great hockey player, in all facets of the game. Better than Yzerman
