Coyotes Recall Schlemko, Maclean

GLENDALE, ARIZONA -- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have recalled defenseman David Schlemko and forward Brett MacLean from their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage.

Schlemko, 22, has appeared in 17 games for the Coyotes this season, recording 1-4-5 and eight penalty minutes (PIM). He scored his first NHL goal for the Coyotes in a 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Nov. 14, 2009. Schlemko has also played in 36 games with San Antonio this season, collecting 3-12-15 and 18 PIM. Last year, he ranked 2nd among Rampage defensemen in scoring with 7-22-29 in 68 games. He also appeared in three games with the Coyotes and registered one assist for his first NHL point.

Yea, MacLean gets his shot!!!!!

Per Maloney, It sounded like Schlemko was called up for practice duty until Michalek/Lepisto return.

I just don't understand- why now? The Rampage still have 4 games before the Coyotes play one.

Practice time for Maclean on the powerplay. I'm guessing he wasn't called up earlier because there weren't many opportunities for him to get practice time with the 1st PP unit. It wouldn't have made much sense to call him up and then stick him on the PP, not that it could make the PP worse.

The Coyotes can and will practice tomorrow. They need him to get some NHL practice and see who he can play with. Maloney said Tip didnt get a good look at him before the season, now's his chance to make a big impression.

Just wondering why you want to break up the Czech line? Its not just our best line, its another shutdown line.

Exactly. Why break up Prucha-Hanzal-Vrbata. Maybe he is thinking Prucha wont be ready but it has already been reported the Prucha is probable for tuesday.

GMDM also said Gistedt is going to be recalled tomorrow until Burke/Bryz get back. Honestly I'd love to see Russia beat Canada tomorrow but Im greedy and want Bryz back at the same time.

My expectations have become so low when it comes to our prospects I'm bound to be pleasantly surprised.

The Diamondbacks did that for me, in all sports. Prospects are just suspects.

Actually I assumed Prucha is injured. That is why I figured MacLean was called up.

I hope we get to see him in a game at least. A few games won't hurt.

Adding to the other responses: teams haven't been allowed to hold official practices since the Olympic break started after the Feb 14th games. Practices can resume on the 24th.

There was a bit of a debate on how this might affect deadline trades--acquiring a player before the Olympic break would add two weeks of salary to a team's cap, but conversely give 4-5 straight days of practice time to adjust.

Highly unlikely, but I think it deserves a good heated discussion....

Maybe MacLean was called up so they can showcase him the night before the trade deadline?

While I'm excited for MacLean's potential in the NHL, he also seems like he could be the type of player whose game falls off when moving from the AHL to the NHL due to the ever-popular answer to the following question which is so often asked:

Q: "What is the biggest difference you have noticed playing in the NHL"
A: "The speed of the game"

MacLean has earned and deserves a chance at the NHL level. There have been plenty of snipers that have had great success in the NHL that were not the fastest skaters around - John Andrechuk comes to mind. Didn't he play about 20 years in the NHL in slow motion.
MacLean has put up big numbers at all levels so far. We need to see what he can do before we trade him away IMO.

Since Gistedt plays goalie like a sieve, I can only assume this is to give the power play unit some confidence during practice. Though I'm not sure why they called up Gistedt, they could have put up a cardboard cutout of Bryz and it would have stopped the same number of shots.

That would be easier on the payroll too!
