Thank god.

I was as big a fan of the signing as anybody because I thought he'd bring an element we were sorely lacking...but he was a complete bust from day one. I'd still like to see us go out and get a real enforcer but I'm just happy Laraque is gone for now.

that's lovely...

I don't really understand why they couldn't keep him "playing" until the end of the season. I assume it's because they didn't want the distraction of him complaining about play time every week.

Unbelievable that we gave him a contract that big WITH a NMC... i suppose that the only bright side may be the Molson's being that much more irritated (having to pay a guy for 2 1/2 years more just to sit at home) and hopefully that much closer to dropping the axe on team management.

just another bright day in habs land

I hope Gainey learned his lesson, don't pay a goon 1.5M$!
Matt Carkner: 500K, 22 fights.
Georges Laraque: 1.5M, 4 fights.

He's basically not worth a spot on the roster if the fight he's involved in always depends on the other guy accepting. There's like 5 people in the NHL who would say "yes" to fighting Laraque if he asked them.

Difference is, Carkner plays, Laraque doesn't.

Remember our team is way too good to play an enforcer...

Good

I was one of those who was excited when we signed BGL but the guy has been nithing but a huge disappointment. I sort of enjoyed his fights but his lack of a mean streak just pissed me off.

Now just get someone who is a bit of a psycho on the side and will get the job done. Or just call up Nielsen and wait to sign Artyukhin on July 1st. This is exactly the type of guy we need.

Yes pretty much...and since the salary cap will slightly increase in 2010-11 and 2011-12, the 500K$ won't matter anyways.

So true.

Im not sure where the blame came from, whether it was Martin not playing him enough in tense situations (as he says), or his little "code" antics (like everyone else says) but I for one am glad hes gone, hes a waste of cap space and hasnt been a factor on the ice.

Sorry George, good guy but useless. Good luck.

I agree that the timing was a little weak from management (right after he scores that goal for Haiti, better late then never I guess).

you all know what that means right????

We can sign Kovalchuk

It's kind of funny to hear Laraque call the Habs organization classless for releasing him during everything he is going through with Haiti, yet their organization donated more money than anyone associated with the NHL.

And it's not like he lost his income. We're paying him to sit at home, and then paying him 500k for two more years after that. Gee Georges, how will you ever cope.

Atleast this frees up cap space/contract space. BGL was useless on the team, and should just open a gym, or work at his gyms and train guys how to fight in the league.
He was signed too late, but he'll always be remembered as a key part of the best line in history, the NHL Hitz 2002 Oilers when I had
Grier-Laraque-Anson Carter.

"Classless," Laraque said angrily. "To do this in the midst of all I'm dealing with in Haiti, the timing is awful. I'm not going to sugar coat anything."

So this must mean his NHL career is over? No other team could be stupid enough to sign him right?

Also with the cap, if he signs with another team before his contract with the habs is over, does that relive the habs of his cap hit? Or does it still count until the time when it's fully bought out.

Isn't it better to release him during the crisis in haiti? Now he can shut his mouth and either put up or shut up and do something good somewhere.

I'll be curious to see if he goes down to help out the effort.
