What to do with Redden

Redden was a huge mistake, I don't blame him for taking the large contract but Slats dropped the ball on this one as he did on Drury, Gomez and Rosie. His contract is unmovable unless someone took him on re-entry. He is no longer a top 2 defenseman and some could argue top 4 is pushing it. The Rangers are also close to the salary cap and could use a little breathing room.

according to CapGeek.coms Buyout Calculator. Buying out Redden this summer would cost the following: Also included is what he would cost if he was taken of re-entry waivers.

SEASON CAP HIT Re-entry
2010-2011 $1,916,667 $3,250,000
2011-2012 $1,916,667 $3,250,000
2012-2013 $3,416,667 $3,250,000
2013-2014 $3,416,667 $3,250,000
2014-2015 $1,916,667
2015-2016 $1,916,667
2016-2017 $1,916,667
2017-2018 $1,916,667

1. the chances of a team trading for him are pretty much zero
2. the chances of a team picking him up on re-entry are slim
3. buying him out hurts us for 8 more years.
4. Banishing him to Hartford - would look bad for future signings

My proposal is to waive him right now. If a team takes him we are on the hook for 3.25 mil a year for the next 4.

Rumors are Chicago needs to move Barker next season to make cap room. Barker is under contract for 2 more years for just under 3.1 mil a year then he becomes a restricted free agent. Barker is in the same shoes as L.A's Jack Johnson, emense talent, just not there yet. However he is a top 4 dman on the Rangers, possibly a top 2, would look great with an anchor like Staal. Combine either Barker's salary and Redden's waiver salary or buyout and the Rangers are still under his 6.5 mil annual salary and you actually have a better defenseman with hue potential.

Chicago is rumored to want a cheaper higher end prospect, a 1st or a player to aid them for a cup run this year.

Some offers:

Sanguinetti and a lower pick for Barker (now or off season)
Higgins and a 2nd for Barker (now)
Girardi, Higgins and our 1st for Barker and Ladd (now)

just my 2 cents

Problem is, Redden is not going to be buried in Hartford unless Sather has suddenly decided to purposely sink his own ship... Ain't gonna happen.

I dont understand all the talk about berrying a player in the minors sends a negative message to future signings. If you dont play well you get put on the outside even if it means getting sent down it should not matter what your name is or how big your contract is.
In fact, maybe this is the message the Rangers need to send?? I think the Rangers organization has been a vacation paradise for heartless money hungry players for to long. If you dont play well, you dont play/ gets sent to the minors. Same treatment for everybody. But i guess thats unrealistic right?

Yeah, you really gotta suck to get sent to the minors when you are making over 6 million per year. What kind of message is it sending? Do we really want guys to come here because they know they can milk our organization for tens of millions of dollars while contributing to its demise? If those kind of players are scared of that they can go sign somewhere else.

Why do people keep saying this? If it hasn't happened yet it isn't going to happen.

As far as buying out Redden, I'd much rather send him to Hartford than be further hamstrung by all that dead cap space. Drury comes of the books next summer. We should be focusing on re-signing guys like Staal this summer and be spending on UFAs in the 2011 off season.

That doesn't make sense to me. Why send him to Hartford now when the team is not a contender? There are no free agents on the market to pick up until the summer...so freeing up cap space would really only help for a trade...where we would have to send away assets in return. I could certainly see him being sent to Hartford next season if we were to make a play for a guy like Kovalchuk this summer.

Let's face it, although sending him down to the minors would be the logical thing to do REDDEN WILL NOT GO ANYWHERE unless the is a contract on the table and Ilya Kovalchuk has signed it. If I was a betting man I'd say that it's a 30% chance Ilya is a Ranger next year, which by simple math says that it is 70% likely that Redden will be on the opening night roster, which he will. I can't stand him as much as the next guy but we are stuck with him for another 5 years.

I may be incorrect, but I believe his contract is also front loaded enough that in a year or two he enters the Rozsival "value" zone for teams looking to spend less but not go below the cap floor. That's about the only time he'll have value, unless he's traded for another albatross of a contract like Lecavalier (no, don't do it).

Sooner or later Red will be in Hart, but there is no reason for it now. Are we going to sign someone in January? No. So let him play. The team needs some vets. We can't have half the defense with no NHL experience.

If Kovalchuk or another FA can be signed, that's when he can be sent down. What Slats needs to do is trade Rosie some time before the trading deadline. By then, Gilroy and MDZ will have almost a full season under the belt and a rookie can be brought in for 6-8 minutes a game over 20 games.

This will prepare the rookie to take real responsibility next year if Redden leaves one way or another.

To me, that seems like a good thing for this team. May let us focus completely on our farm system.
