So, I was looking at the 2005 draft and it got me thinking. Assuming the Kings passed on Kopitar and knowing what we do today, who do you draft? Staal or Kopitar?
This is a hypothetical. If your going to waste our time posting things like "But they did draft Kopitar" don't even post here
I think I still draft Staal. This team would have serious problems without Staal for the last 3 years.
thats tough. I love Staals game - but considering goals win games and the Rangers have a hard time putting the puck in the net - Ill go with Kopitar. At least you still have Henrik then.
Agreed. If you're going to play this game, why not on a player who was actually available to the Rangers when they selected, as in:
Staal or Stastny?
Then the choice would be a helluva lot easier. I would choice Staal any day over Stastny becuase Stastny isn't a game breaker like Kopitar is/could be.
How many 80+ point players are there in the league...
How many #1 D-Men are in the league... How important are they when you have Crosby, Malkin, Richards, Carter, Elias etc.. etc..

I actually prefer "its a no brainer" because it shows that in your eyes... It's an open and close case. Of course you failed to mention who you voted for but I'm gonna assume its not staal. your first response, however, hinted at NOTHING.
I like Staal, but don't love him. I don't think he'll ever be a superstar/Norrs winner/all star, but I hope I'm wrong. However, feeling the way I do, I will go with Kopitar, and it's not close.
because its a weird question and has so many unforeseen consequences...
If the question was, would you trade Staal for Kopitar...well then, thats a little different.
What are the "unforeseen consequences" that made you make that decision? I looked at it as almost being the same as "would you trade staal for kopitar".
Knowing what we know now at the time of the draft, you take Kopitar.
If you just give the Rangers the 12th pick again, with no knowledge of how the future of the team would shake out, and have Kopitar and Staal both there, I think we still take Staal.

Because the question was about the past rather than the present...kinda like the butterfly effect. If they take Kopitar with pick 1, how does that effect the rest of their picks? Do they still take Tom Pyatt in the 4th round? or do they try to get another defenseman? Does Tom Pyatt not being taken effect the Rangers ability to trade Scott Gomez away? Does that affect the ability to sign Gaborik?
I dunno, maybe im overthinking it...i tend to do so with time anomalies...its the Star Trek nerd in me

But as you can see, the choice is easy anyway: Kopitar by a mile.
