Malkin is one of the three best players in hockey. He could surely fetch Drew Doughty without even a slight bit of hesitation.

Just No.

Can add this to all the other threads showing why LA and Pit don't make good trading partners.

I still think elite defense men are valued or have more value than elite forwards.

If we were talking about Eric Staal for Drew Doughty, you'd have a point.

But we're talking the reigning Art Ross winner, Conn Smythe winner, Calder and Hart winner. Don't get me wrong, Doughty's a stud. But Malkin, on his game, is borderline generational. He's in a different class than Drew Doughty, no matter what the weekly "wisdom" on HF is.

Wow, I thought we were overdue for a completely bonkers proposal involving the Kings.

Geno's not a Hart winner. A 2x Hart runner up, though. Damn, Ovechkin!

Anyway, Geno > Doughty for now. Drew's a stud, but how is there any argument for Doughty > Malkin? Are we just throwing out all accomplishments to this point and going on the potential to do this and that down the road? Save the Doughty > Malkin claims until Doughty wins a Conn Smythe or something.

Brown + Johnson would cost something like...

Staal, Tangradi, Letang so I highly doubt either team would do it

This isn't just an elite forward. Guys like Toews, Parise, and Thornton are elite. Malkin is a step above that.

I think you're right in the valuation process, but Malkin is that good that he is more valuable than any defenseman in the NHL.

He may be one day but hes not at this point in time. How Malkin is a level above Parise and maybe a level above Thornton, Parise is a level above a guy like Toews right now.

.....Really? Thats like saying Price for Ersberg.

But to get back on topic with the thread it would take Staal and Letang, with some picks/prospects evening it out. Malkin isnt getting traded so it doesnt matter.

Right, but it's ******** to value potential over production. Doughty may very well become the best defenseman in the NHL...but Malkin's already cemented his status as one of the best 3 players in the world and if you take a look at his stats and awards from last year...he was the best player in the league. Maybe Doughty can do that to? But let's not act like it's a certainty...because it isn't.

Oh...and you know what wins Championships? Elite centers...wanna guess how I know? I watched the playoffs last year.

And yet Doughty is producing close to the elite defensemen in the league at 20 yrs old. I never said it was a certainty that Doughty was going to become one of the best defenseman in the game let alone one of the best players.

No ****? Elite centers win championships? I never knew that after watching pretty much every team for the last 10 yrs to win the Cup have that all in common.

DL would not trade Doughty for any forward because it would open up too big of a hole on D. Doughty for Malkin leaves the Kings a #1 defenseman short and you aren't getting a #1 as good as Doughty for Kopitar.

Cool...then keep Doughty...even though the proposal you so wisely turned down would never be offered.

First off, the name "SFKingshomer". That makes me understand his statement more. Gretzky never got traded either. If the pens or caps GM "Hypothetically" offered Crosby,Malkin, or Ovechkin for Doughty and the Kings GM said no I would hypothetically laugh my *** off. He is good, but come on.

Well, if the Kings get a chance to trade Drew for Malkin they would be a fool not to no matter what the circumstances. Malkin is one of the three guys I mentioned that I would trade the elite 20 year old defenseman. They can use their financial flexibility and trading pieces for another good dman.

Bottom line with the Pens is that decent long term wings will need to come from within, on ELC contracts(namely, two of Tangradi/Johnson/Caputi). Otherwise, Shero has shown he'll deal spare parts/picks/prospects for help at the deadline. Staal has proven to be way too important in the playoffs to deal. There's no way he'll be dealt unless it's for massive overpayment, I would think.
