Why would the caps be interested in Souray?

They are right up against the cap too... not only that but Souray's contract doesn't help the fact they still need to re-sign Backstrom who will demand Toews/Kane money easily.

They have the cap space to make it work this season. It's next year (and beyond) that this addition would make zero sense...and it doesn't make all that much more sense for this season either.

Hardly.

Unless Souray is better in his own end than advertised, I can't see the Caps doing this.

Why bother posting in the thread then...

So many people discredit anything if it has an Eklund tag, then if TSN says the same thing Eklund just stole it form them.

If you don't like Eklund's rumors then don't post on the thread.

Grow up

He is much better in his own end than advertisted, but I don't believe him to be a fit unless you plan on letting some of your free agent defenseman walk.

Seriously has Eklund ever got anything right? Maybe something like 3 times out of the blockbuster rumor he posts everyday. There is absolutely no credibility in this rumor so why shouldn't I voice something about it. IMO the Eklund rumors should not be posted here.

And edmontonoil could have just posted the link into the other thread he made about this.

He named four teams.......subtract a handful of playoff squads that wouldn't meet Souray's geographical needs, and voila, Eklund has a 33% chance of being right!

When I looked at numbers before, Caps could probably afford Souray next year if they traded Poti in the summer. But like it's been said, he's far from being the ideal target -- as it appears neither his mobility nor his defensive ability justify his cap hit..

nhlnumbers doesn't account well for LTIR and call-ups etc...

here are the cap numbers according to capgeek.com, which tracks daily cap hits for each team:

http://www.capgeek.com/tracker/

according to that, the Caps have $3,950,812 this season (keeping in mind that the bonus cushion is there this season for them), which as of today allows them to pick up $10,061,401 in max contracts.

What are you getting a kick-back from Eklund to post his garbage rumors?

The Caps can afford just about any two players on the market.

They are in great shape with regards to the salary cap, but just for this year.

Available cap space gets banked daily. According to Capgeek, this is what each teams available cap hit space will look like at the TDL:

I don't think their cap situation is too bad moving forward either... Theodore's $4.5mill comes off after this season, along with $4.5mill from the defense, while they have young players on ELCs to fill all those spots, and should be able to account for Backstrom's raise.

Then the following season Semin's $6mill is done, along with over $6mill from Knuble and Poti combined.

The Caps have been collecting several young assets that are developing in their system (top farm team in the league), and should have some cheap assets available for the next couple seasons to fill in for those high out-going salaries.
