Just a Thought - Gaborik for a Signed Kovalchuk?

I know there will be people who don't agree with this, and superstar for superstar trades almost never happen. Would you be for or against a trade of Gaborik for a signed Kovalchuk for around 9 Million per season? Just wanted to see what others thought.

I would do that, but it's a fantasy. Kovalchuk is the better player and he doesn't have an injury history.

No way. Gaborik is better on the defensive side of the puck, and he's as good offensively. And his contract is for $1.5M less.

Yes but Atlanta may want an established player in return, similar to the Heatley for Hossa deal a few years back.

what is the freaking pt of that?. They are both stars and Gabby is fitting in great.

Rangers need to wait out Kovalchuk and go after him as a UFA as he likely will not sign anyway and they can't afford to deal the future

Gaborik signs here in good faith and the Rangers trade him? Not happening ever.

It's a pipedream, but Kovalchuk is definitely the better all-around offensive player. I would consider it, although acquiring Kovalchuk wouldn't be the sole answer to this team's problems.

Gaborik and Kovalchuk are pretty comparable players. Gaboriks cap hit will be less, and he's already proven he can produce in New York with basically no help whatsoever. Can Kovalchuk?

Id rather have both...if i have to pick one or the other, i'd probably take gaborik just because hes a known quantity, is likely going to be cheaper, and I think he plays significantly better in his own end of the ice.

We'd have a better offensive player. All-around, the edge goes to Gaborik. He's also cheaper and has proven himself to be a good fit in NY.

A lateral move at best.

So.... we go from a team with one legit offensive threat.... to a team with one legit offensive threat. This would accomplish nothing - plus Kovy would want more money on a longer deal. I want Kovy, but not in a lateral move...

No reason to do it with the organizational depth LW, and lack of it at RW. Even if you think Kovalchuk is the far superior player, this is less than a lateral move.

I'll take gaborik over kovy anyday.

kovy has not had a SINGLE positive +/- season.

gabby has only had one negative +/- season, and he wasn't exactly on impressive teams.

granted +/- isn't a terribly great stat to rely on it, but it signifies that he's lacking something defensively if he's scoring all those goals and can't pull a positive +/-.

And besides, why would we give up gaborik, who we have on a 5 year contract, for kovy, who's a UFA at the end of the season?

If we really want him we can just sign him.

How does this solve our problem of secondary scoring? This only enhances it because you're tying up an extra $1.5 million in kovalchuk. Thats less money to spend to find support for him which is what we're trying to do with gaborik right now so he can get more space on the ice.

This is a lateral move. No reason to do it. And if anything, Gaborik has proved he can handle the spotlight in New York, whereas we don't know what Kovalchuk can do here.

Well then, if we are doing this than how about this trade?

To Edmonton:
Gaborik + Redden + Kotalik

To NYR:
Hemsky + Penner + Souray

Rangers trade Rozsival in the offseason and sign Kovalchuk for 9.5 million per season.

Hemsky-Dubinsky-Kovalchuk
Callahanh-Anisimov-Penner
Lisin-Drury-Avery
Weise/Byers/Owens-Boyle-Voros
Brashear

Staal-Souray
Girardi-MDZ
Gilroy-Sauer/Sanguinetti/Heikenen

haha!
