No surprise.

Chia must be crazy to give top 5 pick for 20 games from Kovalchuk. Even with Kovalchuk, Boston won't win Stanley.

Why? Is another team offering anything close to a top 3 pick for a rental Kovalchuk?

I don't know if it's going to happen (and frankly, I hope it doesn't happen given how much they are going to have to give up to get him), but Boston has as many moveable assets in terms of picks and prospects as any other team bidding on his services. If they don't get Kovalchuk, it's not going to be because they refused to give up that pick.

The Thrashers will trade Kovalchuk for much less than your fans base think. Absolutely no one will give up a lot, unless for a signed Kovalchuk, what definetely not gonna happen.

Every Boston proposal i saw included Wheeler. We DO NOT want him. It's not because he's a bad player, just because he would cry like a baby because he's playing in Atlanta.

Unless your giving up Krejci i'll pass. We will EASILY get a better offer.

Love how people try to hose us because it's Atlanta.

That would be ok I guess. Keep him out of the West unless he's with the Avs.

No Contender is going to give up a major contributing roster piece at the deadline.

The west needs a flashy superstar like the BIg 3... Kovy would be a great fit in LA or Colorado

I'd only give up Krejci if I knew that we're getting Seguin with TOR's pick

But, fyi, ATL is not dealing from a position of strength here. Yes there is a bidding war, but it's a bidding war for a late season addition UFA, no one is gonna give up a huge hunk of their franchise future for that (unless you're Brian Burke). The deal will likely be similar to the one for Hossa. You're not getting the TOR pick, nor is anyone else.

"But I can tell you one thing -- I'm not trading Toronto's pick [for this year]," Chiarelli said. "I am not trading it. That pick is too valuable."

Tell that stuff to any Toronto GM.

Good post, Disco...

ATL won't get anybody's first pick, but I do think they'll get two starting players - especially because of the bidding war you mention.

I also believe that Atlanta will throw in somebody (Armstrong, White, Pavelec, Hedberg) to make it worthwhile for what Atlanta wants.

Well, I won't say anybodys. Boston could give up their own 1st rounder, since we do have TOR's. We also have 3 2nd round picks this year, I believe.

Leafs' 2011 1st RDer is in play I bet. Someone should try and jump on that. I know 2011 is supposed to be weak, but it could be another lottery pick if Toronto trades Kaberle.

Agreed. BOS certainly has the assets (tons of picks, good prospects) to pull off the deal, only two points working against the Bruins:

Does ATL want to trade Kovalchuk within Eastern Conf.?

Can Bruins move out enough salary (either to ATL or another swap) to absorb Kovalchuk's contract?

Normally I wouldn't peg BOS as making a bold move and surrendering parts of future for a rental UFA - BUT, with such high expectations on team off last year and Bruins vastly underperforming on ice and to fans....I really can envision a deal happening provided ATL wants to dance.

Now whether that's the smart move or not, is another story.

Personally, I'm not on the "bring Kovy to Boston" train. I don't think this year is a good window for us, whoever wins the West will be stiff competition, and in the East we'd have to get through a combo of BUF, NJD, PIT, etc ... it doesn't look that good the way we're performing. Kovy could potentially shake things up here and turn the ship around, I just don't see it myself.

I think landing an impact player with TOR's 1st rounder this year (and potentially next year) and riding out the Sturm/Ryder contracts will leave us in a good position to acquire talent and promote some homegrown guys. A lot of B's fans are frustrated after how good last season was (me too), and getting Kovy in a Bruins uni would be good PR, but I don't think acting rashly like this will help long term.

I think Bos moves the Tor pick if Kovy would agree to a contract extension first, but, that's unlikely

This should not be an issue whatsoever. When you're dealing a franchise player, you need to make sure you're getting the most out of your return, especially for a rental player. If the Capitals were offering a better package than the Canucks, you take the Caps' deal. The number one priority is bettering your team, not worrying about others.

THe only threat to Boston for NHL ready talent is Chicago or LA. In terms of prospects/picks, nobody holds a candle to Bosto right now. Boston could offer their first, three seconds, Toronto's first next year, and not look back. It also doesnt matter if the fan base wants Wheeler, its the GM. Wheeler has his value, serious value being he can be cost controlled. If Bruins offer this:

Wheeler
Colborne
Toronto 2011 First
Tampa 2nd this year

Waddel could accept that, easily. Its not an Atlanta getting hosed thing, its that GM's aren't stupid. 20 games and a playoff run, that is all any GM guarnateed gets for Kovy. Chicago knows it wont get any more then that, LA may be able to and Boston may be able to. Not sure you will get a better offer EASILY then someone like Krejci.
