A Mood Lightener

Because we all need one.

I was at a party last night, and some guys from the school hockey team showed up. One of them saw I was wearing a Rangers hat and came up to me and started talking some smack. Eventually this is how the conversation went:

"But seriously man, I have nothing against the Rangers. My buddy Mike is on the team, so I have to like them."

"........ Mike?"

"Yeah, man. Mike Del Zotto."

So after I recovered from the shock, we started talking a bit about MDZ. He tells me this gem of a story:

So apparently when he first made the team out of camp, MDZ went to the bank to open up an account. When he told the teller that, they responded by asking if he want to open a student account, or if he wanted a max withdrawal limit of $1000 or something. Somewhat perturbed, he informs the teller that he could potentially be making upwards of $1,000,000 this year, and that he recent bought a Bentley in cash. So no, he would not be needing a student account.

Oh, and by following a trail of Facebook friends, I eventually reached Mitch Gaulton's page, and he literally has THE sappiest quote for his girlfriend. He even ended it with a little "<3".

"When you're rich, you don't write checks."

"How do you pay man?" "If you don't write checks how do you pay these guys?"

"Straight cash, homey"

I dunno if that is such a mood lightener. According to CapGeek, MDZ makes $875K a year for 3 years on his ELC. After US/NY taxes, that's about $500K per anum. So, he goes out and drops ~$150K on a car? Someone get this kid a financial advisor!

I think he has some rookie bonus incentives in there.

If I was making more money than a heart surgeon for playing a game, yeah, my first purchase would be a nice car too.

Yeah he must have had a signing bonus. And if he said "I might be making more than $1,000,000 this year" he must have been expecting to make the playoffs and earn more from that as well.

1) There's a nice car and then there's a Bentley.

2) A heart surgeon is pretty much guaranteed that earning power for 40 years. MDZ is one Tomas Kloucek injury away from being unemployed with no degree and no marketable skills.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I'm just thinking of the kid's best interests! Wait until you get your first UFA deal before you buy the STUPIDLY expensive car. I mean, seriously - you can make do with a BMW until then, can't you?

Sorry to be such a killjoy. Practicality has no real place on a thread entitled "Mood Lightener," does it?

Honestly, even though I think he must have had a signing bonus or something, I was thinking similarly when I first read this. Although on top of thinking "wow, way to spend it quick" I couldn't help but think about how it's so in keeping with the attitude of this team for a (then) 18 year old kid to go out and buy a Bentley before he's even secured his spot on the roster for good. I'd think more of it if it wasn't for the fact that DZ's been pretty good this year but even so, it was the first thing that crossed my mind.

Ok, so he spent 30% of his annual pay on a car. How many people spend far greater than that percentage on a car?

Plus he bought it with straight cash. The majority of people finance their car and pay even more due to interest.

MDZ can do whatever he chooses with his money. He is playing better than rozsival and redden who make a whole lot more than he.

When Brooks wrote an article about "fat cats" a few weeks ago, he failed to mention that MDZ was one of them.

The more I think of it, wouldn't a simple "No, thanks." have sufficed? Comes off a little ****ish to me.

Yeah, there really was no need to tell her that he bought a Bentley
