Van Ryn Update

http://www.torontosun.com/sports/hoc...58936-sun.html

Defenceman Mike Van Ryn, who underwent osteotomy surgery on his knee in October and was facing a 10-month rehab, has actually started skating a little bit and said after Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday that he is a couple of months ahead of schedule, although it is still unlikely he will return this season.

Thanks. He looked very good at the beginning, and then got injured. Probably will never be the same again. If he could have stayed healthy, dealing Kaberle would have made alot more sense than it does now. Hope he makes a quick recovery.

I'll be surprised if Van Ryn plays another 20 games in the NHL, if even 1 game.

Van Ryn has played 353 or 362 games (includes playoffs) and needs 400 for pension.

Desjardins estimates that about 40% of the game is captured by Corsi analysis.

Best of luck to MVR...I'm hoping someone gives him a chance, he will need some time to get it back but I think he can do it.

What a great point.. I never considered how close he was to this.

No doubt if he's healthy enough to play he will get ice time next year. It's up to him to keep it together.

Why wouldn't we offer him a minimum league contract for 1 season?

Let him try to get to those 400 games, he's a good player and could help this team

He'll sign with the Panthers this off season and resume his career with McCabe as his Partner.

An underrated piece of bad luck for this team.

MVR was looking excellent last season. He would have really solidified our defense corps.

Because we have already given him enough free money.

I would think somebody will give him an incentive-based contract for one year.

That's fine, I just want to see 90% of this organization turned over and forget this dark chapter in Leafs history.

He's played 47 games in the last 3 seasons. Seems a long shot for the guy. I feel for him.

If this guy wants ta stick around Toronto and is more or less healthy by the summer we could sign him for minimum and start him off in the A... and if he gets his **** together he may work out as a cool bottom-pairing man for us. I just don't see him recovering to the extent needed to play professionaly. The guy has barely played the past 3 years, and this year he's got nothing. The guy's got 47 games accounted for. Man, so sad. I remember his first 11 games I think it was he had 3 goals and 5 assists. 8 points in eleven games! Then when he came back he could only rack up a few assists in the around 15 games he played before he got KO'D again..Our defense was actually doing quite well with him. Kaberle in an interview said that the defense had improved immensely pon' his return. Really too bad. What would it have been then?

Kaberle-Van Ryn
Kubina-Schenn
White-Finger
Frogren-Sifers
Cola-Stralman
Oreskovic-Harrison..... What a mess. A lot of sad stories on defense for us... Berard, Van Ryn, Berg, Cross sheejz

I know other don't feel the same way, but MVR was playing like a good offensive player last year, but was not really good defensively, which is our biggest problem, and he was never goimg to replace Kaberle. He's offensive, good on the PP with Kaberle but he is not a puck mover.

i felt like he was pretty good when he played, just kept having a series of freak injuries. i would resign him for $700,000-900,000 on a 1 year deal. when playing is an upgrade on finger/exelby and arguably a few others. the key is when he is playing...

He was decent enough until Kostopolous re-decorated his face with the boards.

He was good offensively. He helped the PP and was good at getting the puck to the net (unl;ike anyone playing defence on the pp this year) and he got the points to prove it. Defensively, he was trying really hard but it had him running around in his own end, not that that is his fault. The whole team was learning a new system, and he was trying to prove he belonged after the horrible, horrible trade. Realistically, he was a poor man's Bryan McCabe, which doesn't make him bad, just that he wasn't as good as his offense seemed to be evidence of.

Does it count if he plays AHL games?

Before it was decided that surgery was the best option for him i was hoping he'd come back and help give the leafs more of an identity. Hard worker and seemed to be a great locker room guy (can't remember who reported it.. might've been Jonas at 640 but last year Wilson apparently asked that he be in the dressing room before games when he was recovering)

I'd say re-sign him at close to minimum for a year or at the very least give him a tryout much like Allison got this year.

Also what was that stat about the Leafs having won a bunch more games with Van Ryn in the lineup than without?

That would be a very classy thing to do for a team that is going through a rebuild.

Depending on how he does in terms of rehab, I would be all for offering him a tiny contract for next year if doctors think he'll be able to play. At a bare minimum, if he's okay by next season's training camp I would invite him and if he did well enough offer him a smallish contract, again, incentive based.

We're in desperate need of all the help we can get. If there's a chance he can stay healthy and actually bring a decent game to the ice then it would be unfortunate to lose him.
