Anyone ragging on Vlassic about not being the second best should take a look at this chart, this was posted on the main board. Also David, look at number 10.
For a few years now, I've been using three of Behind The Net's stats to come up with rankings for defensive prowess among players: quality of competition, goals against per 60 minutes at even strength and goals against per 60 minutes while shorthanded. I've abbreviated those figures below as QCMP, EVGA and SHGA.
Taking defencemen who have played at least 30 games and who play a key role on their team's penalty kill (about two minutes or more a game), here's my ranking of the league's top defensive defencemen prior to Thursday night's games: Click this bar to view the small image.

I like this ranking. Scientific. I guess I would have to take that Norris hopeful Josh Georges over that late-bloomer Dan Boyle. Makes sense to me.
It's on defensive ability only. Boyle is great, but isn't exactly up there purely in terms of defensive ability. As for Vlasic's poor QUALCOMP, it's reflected in his actual EVGAA and SHGAA. His EVGAA is the lowest (by far) among guys who's SHGAA isn't absolute crap. (And his SHGAA is still 3rd best in the list.) Change his qualcomp numbers and his GAA numbers would probably go up a bit, but not much higher that Keith and Lidstrom. Just look at the Chicago game. While every other dman was absolute crap in the 1st 10 minutes, only Vlasic seemed competent.
Do you know if the days of the Olympic break can count within the 24 needed to get LTIR relief? Or, does it have to be days and games before and after?

Nothing in the CBA says you can't count the days during the Olympic Break, but the other qualifier is number of games - a player cannot be put on LTIR unless it is expected he will be out for a minimum of 10 games AND 24 days - which works against a player getting on LTIR over the break.
Pickles will have only missed 8 games before the break. Unless the team doctor is willing to certify that he is expected to be out through March 4 (2nd game after the Olympics), then he cannot be put on LTIR.

Another issue WRT LTIR, is that the Sharks used their two injured players to count against their 20 roster minimum. So, how would that work out if Malhotra & Vlasic head to the IR (at all) retroactively with them being counted against the minimum?

Retroactively putting Pickles on LTIR would have no effect on the roster minimum. LTIR is purely a cap mechanism. If/when pickles is (retroactively) placed on LTIR, he will also be placed (not retroactively) on the regular Injured Reserve List - that is when he would be removed from the Active Roster and no longer count against the 20 player minimum.
I actually saw Vlasic in Tahoe this weekend. Saturday, to be exact. He was going into Safeway with his girlfriend as I was coming out. Dude's bigger than I thought he'd be. Anyway, he had an obvious limp as he was walking, which is never a good sign. I'm not surprised he wasn't on the ice recently since I saw that.

wait
Vlasic listens to Celine Dion and has a girlfriend?
So I went to Amici's (Thanks LS) and a bunch of Sharks and Rusnowsky were there signing autographs. Huskins was there, he was very friendly. I asked him about his injury last year and he said he wasn't fully healed and hockey ready until right around training camp. Leach was there, I incorrectly named the teams he played for. I mentioned Minnesota and he said "No thankfully not that team." (kind of a interesting statement). Staubitz is now one of my favorite players, the guy is STUPID friendly. He approached people and initiated convo, very nice person.
Now to Vlasic, I agree with the statement earlier, he is much bigger in person and has a big upper body. He also had an extremely noticeable limp. It looked like he was favoring his right leg. I don't think there is any way he plays on Tuesday.
