Jackets - Pens Rumor

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Eric-...eason/96/25889

Pens Looking To Pen A Deal?

Nothing specific right now other than the Pittsburgh Penguins Assistant General Manager Jason Botterill was in attendance and the Penguins have has scouts camping out at Nationwide Arena for awhile. I also know from sources that the Blue Jackets have done the same and have been seen at the last several Penguins games. Reading the tea leaves, something is brewing and their is little doubt that they would be looking at Raffi Torres. Even though the Penguins only have roughly $1 million in cap room as they sit now, with the prorating the cap hit of $2.25 million of Torres contract at the deadline would only put a hit of $500,000 to the Penguins. Don't have any other information at this point of what could be coming back but with scouts being at the big club games, makes me think that a roster player and not a prospect. I will keep my ear to the ground on this one.

[Sorry saw the Vermette parts and realized I had to scroll down to see the rumor.]

Anyway, it's Eklund so that means either:

a) 100% fabricated
or
b) Stating the obvious based on known presence of scouts, team's record, etc.

Not sure who we'd have to give up to get Torres though. He's kind of a tweener talent. Would hate to give up a legit talent for the guy as I don't think his impact would be that great. We could do worse, though.

Could be Torres. Some people throw Modin's name around, but that's a big cap hit for a guy that's not a sure thing because of the injuries etc.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they took a look at a depth D-Man like Jurcina. I doubt Columbus would move Hejda, but one can dream. Either way, it beats the hell out of Skoula.

No thanks to Modin. He's a talented guy but doesn't really fit the bill here (inconsistent, expensive, often hurt, etc).

The project I'd really love to get from Columbus, and which I wouldn't be too pissed to see Gogs or Tanger traded for is Voracek but it will never happen IMO.

I can't take a piece of "journalism" with that kind of grammar seriously.

(Not that it's surprising given the outlet it's coming from)

This really isn't eklund. He's only reporting that there were scouts in attendants, so trade speculation is only natural.

Yyyyeah they're not trading Voracek. Anyways, I'm not too keen on Torres but I would be willing to give something meaningful for Hejda. That's about the only player I would realistically want from their team.

Hence my "it will never happen" comment, but if they were looking for top pairing D talent we could certainly deliver that price.

Won't happen as long as Hitch is coaching there. Seems like Voracek is the anti-Filatov since Hitch actually likes him.

I think we'd have a better chance at Filatov as long as Hitch is coaching there and we'd probably have a better chance at Voracek and no chance at Filatov when Hitch leaves or is fired. Either one would cost us at least Gogo or Tanger.

I live in Columbus and follow the Jackets some what. Most Jacket fans want Torres to re-sign.

They won't trade:
Umberger
Vermette
Brassard
Voracek
Russell
Nash (obviously)
Hejda
Klesla
Tyutin
Dorsett

Could be traded:
Filatov (un-likely)
Clark
Boll
Modin (horrible cap hit)
Stralman
Torres
Huselius (same as Modin)

I'm not saying i would do this deal as is but something like Gogo for Torres+Filatov. I'm sure more will be added from the Pens end, i'm just saying some pieces of the deal. Of course Jackets fans will say they don't need Gogo, they got some guys coming to their lineup but Gogo is a proven talent unlike unproven.

yea if it was a gogo + talbot centered deal we could probably swing that.... and to be honest i would be all over that one.... even if we added a pick. something like

gogo, talbot, and a 3rd

for

torres, filatov and a 4th

essentially gogo for filatov and talbot and a 3rd for torres

While it would not be the best letting Gogo go, but if we can keep Gonchar to 1 year deals or a 2 year deal it would not hurt that much in the short term but we really don't need to be rolling 3 offensive defenseman. 2 offensive dmen and 4 defensive dmen is fine by me and probably something we should do.

Not sure Shero would ever do it, but how about is Howson offered Filatov & Torres for Staal. Do you think Shero would bite? Do you think it would benefit the team long term if Torres would re-sign @ season's end for his current salary?

Torres would be a nice addition that wouldn't cost to much and add to the overall depth at wing. He is not the big "sniper" that everyone wants that in reality we can't afford but he is in his prime and UFA next year.

I think he is the best player the Jackets could be looking to trade and I would want him more then Poni.

Hell no. Staal stays.

I'm fine if we can get another Sykora for his type of money. Malkin needs a shooter on his line. Even if he scores 22-25 goals, that is good enough IMO.

I think Shero would pass. Torres is a rental and Filatov is in Russia. Staal is one of our top 4 assets after Crosby, Malkin & Fleury. Shero knows he has to be extremely careful moving him. It has to be the perfect deal and that's not it, imo.

I'm thinking it would have to more like R J Umberger and Filatov. Filatov has all the skill in the world but outside of one hat trick he hasn't done anything in the NHL and now had a rep for being tough to coach. Not to mention that Staal is Shero's guy, that makes him even more valuable to him.

Would you really want Torres more than Poni? I think that's a fairly decent drop off in talent myself.
