with this big Cal-Tor trade

Do you think that the flood gates are open now for other deals to go thru?
Calgary has way to many forwards.Do you think they take a run at Kovalchuck?
Id like to see the Canucks maybe (i said maybe) make an offer for Langkow.
But dont think thats happening.

I'm thinking this takes a player out of the Kovy sweepstakes making it less likely he gets traded at the deadline, but thats just me.

The chances of Vancouver and Calgary making a deal are the same as, well, it just aint happening.

According to Eklunds "domino effect" post, we should expect to see multiple deals within the week.

It really has been an exciting day. A lot of people, including Phaneuf, did not see this trade happening. Some may say that with this deal Calgary is taken out of the Kovalchuk hunt, but I don't see it that way.

Don Waddell has been quoted as saying he doesn't want only draft picks, but quality roster players if and when he trade Kovalchuk. With Calgary's depth at forward, I believe it will make it easier for the Flames to get a deal done with the Thrashers.

I'm not sure what a Flames/Thrashers deal may look like, but I expect this may be the reason why Calgary didn't trade any picks and decided to trade a prospect in Aulie instead.

An interesting name is Rene Bourque, UFA, who will get a big raise this off season. He is having a solid break out season with the Flames as I expected he would, picking him in round 6 in my hockey pool. He's a solid all around player, but I imagine the Thrashers would only ask for him if they are able to sign him before the trade.

Another name that may be available in a Kovalchuk deal is Olli Jokinen who has been under achieving as a Flame, but still has the talent to be an impact player, but Stajan will be pushing him for top line minutes.

If seen a lot of writers on HFboards talk about how Stajan is a horrible player, but this is totally false. Stajan is a very effective 2-way center who is not afraid to go to the corners or the front of the net. He's still young and getting better every year.

Calgary has put themsleves in a position to possibly make another big move before the deadline. While losing Phaneuf may (or may not) be hard to swallow for Flames fans, Giordano has really stepped up this season and his strong play made this deal possible for the Calgary organisation.

Even though he didn't get the team right(last I checked like 2 weeks ago) he's nailed Sutter's interest in Jokinen, and Sutter shopping Phaneuf.

Don't Stajan, White and Mayers have cap hits as well??

Phaneuf's cap hit was $6.5 million, and the Flames are taking back salary, so how does that give them an extra $ 8 million in space??

Hey there iamking the reason the Flames didn't trade any draft picks is because they have already traded them. They don't pick till the third round this year. Kovalchuk is gone my friend it will be minor deals now and they might be able to get a second rounder with one of their forwards but the depth you talk of is non exsistant. They are a team full of plumbers and grinders that added a few more plumbers and grinders.

That's why Jokinen would probably been involved in a Thrashers/Flames trade
