Dam, if this isn't at all related to any sort of Kovalchuk deal, what kind of assets do the Leafs trade? The assets I could see in a Phaneuf deal would be Kadri and Kessel, and I don't see them trading either of those right now.
Kovalchuk to Flames now? Things just got a lot tougher in the NW.
I doubt it, the Flames were in cap hell and apparently Dion wasn't that liked in the locker room.
It seems like the Flames are getting Ian White, Matt Stajan and Nazem Kadri. If Kadri turns out as projected, that could be a really good trade. Then again, if Phanuef shows his form from his first two seasons, Toronto could easily win.
This deal makes the Flames instantly a much better team for this season. Sure they lose Phanuef who's the best player in the deal, but he's also got a huge contract that he isn't living up to.

It makes the Flames better for next season, when they can sign someone. For now, none of the players coming the Flames' way are impressing me.
keys to the deal for calgary are white and hagman, both of those guys were the best players for the leafs this season and are two of the more underrated guys in the league
stajan and mayers seem like burke's trying to dump some trash out of toronto, surprised sutter would take them on
better deal for toronto, they get the best player in the trade who is also a young guy and they clear room for more of their young guys to trade...phaneuf becomes the new domi in that he'll be the subject of coaches corner every week
burke also saying they will announce another trade in about 30 minutes
phaneuf has been playing much much better recently but this will make the Flames better. They instantly improve their offense from this deal. Stajan and Hagman will make this a deep forward team.

I don't know if they're much better but I do think it's an upgrade too. Stajan and Hagman will push Dawes and Glencross down the depth chart where they belong and their forward group suddenly looks respectable.

Just like they made the Leafs a deep offensive team?
Calgary essentially only has one good top-six forward. Just like the Leafs had one good top-six forward.
Crazy. It might help them this year. But Calgary just traded Phaneuf when his value was rock-bottom. Terrible asset management.
This trade can serve as a wake-up call to Phaneuf. If he can play back to the performance of a few years ago, then the trade would be a win for the Leafs. Otherwise, it's a dud all around but at least Calgary cleared up some cap space.

Next season they only save about $3.5M in this deal, so who are they going to sign with that much that makes it worth it?
I think this deal is very much about getting the Flames into the post-season this year as it is about shedding Dion's cap hit going forward. Ian White is a very underrated player and although he's not in Dion's level, he's both solid defensively and offensively, something you can't say about Phaneuf on most nights. Hagman gives them a solid 25+ goal scorer and Stajan, as said as it sounds, is probably their #1 center now. It's easy to look at the players Calgary got and classify them as spare parts, as to to a team out of the post-season picture they are, but those three will go a long way in getting the Flames to the post-season THIS year which is really all that matters to Sutter.
