Prospect Exchange: TO - DRW

Toronto:
Juraj Mikus

Detroit:
Gustav Nyquist

With Detroit's aging defensive core, and Toronto's non-existent offensive depth it would make sense for both teams to start adding pieces to the farm.

tell us about mikus, ive never heard of him. nyqvist is having a great year and looks to have the potential of a 2nd liner in the nhl. great skill set and hockey sense. needs to get stronger though

Not a blue chip, but hes looked good so far, hes been pretty good for the Marlies this season, from what i've seen....6'4 185, Slovakian, 20-21 years old....I don't even think we trade him right now, hes still very young and undeveloped....

I wont say hes untouchable....but we definitely stand to gain wayy more to hold on to him for a couple more years, and see if his game continues to develop...because he has shown to be very smart defensively with very good offensive upside, and good stick skills, given his large frame...Gunnar could be traded if we were trying to win now, but for a rebuilding team....we wouldn't trade a d man, with such high potential, unless for established NHL talent....more then teams are willing to pay....

Gunnarson is playing amazing. He is exactly what a good defenceman is... he was drafted here brought up here, IMO he is almost an untouchable the way he is playing. Very steady not very many risks. Wouldn't trade him IMO.

I'd pass. Nyquist is tied for 6th in scoring as a Sophomore and has the third best ppg in the nation. While he may not necessary turn out to be much, it's hard to trade him away before he's even played a single professional game.

As far as Gun, we'll have 8 defensemen under contract when Lilja returns so it's not practical at all.

Hes playing steady on a bad Toronto team. With White gone, he has potential to be there if Kaberle gets moved.

Gunarsson has pretty much earned a spot on our team going forward for awhile.

Nyquist can potentially be a future Zetterberg, so I'll pass on that.

Doesn't sound like either team wants this. Nyquist is a long term project with Zetterberg upside, while Gun sounds like an integral part of the Leafs blueline already.

I'm not familiar with Mikus, but DET has the pieces in place to replace their aging defensive core...Ericsson and Kindl are NHL ready, and the only one that really might be leaving immediately is Lidstrom (admittedly a big loss when it happens). I'd have to say no.

And along with Nyquist, Brendan Smith is a Hobey candidate as well. Top scoring defenseman in the nation.

Nyquist stays.

Actually, Gunnarsson is currently rated by HF at 7.0B. Mikus is currently rated at 6.5C.

As much as I like the idea of swapping prospects, the Leafs can't really afford to move either of the aforementioned young D-men as they have few offensive-minded D-men within their system, not to mention good PMD's.

Also, their depth at defense is not all that good either, so it doesn't make sense for them to deplete that position just to try to shore up another area where they are also weak.

While I wouldn't mind seeing Nyquist in the Leaf system, I just don't see how the Leafs could acquire him, unless the Red Wings are willing to take back a left wing prospect in the 6.0C HF rating range. Either that, or the Red Wings could trade Nyquist for D. Vorobiev and try their luck at getting him to come over.

Other than that, I don't see the Leafs getting Nyquist.

Nyquist is currently showing far too much upside to give away at this point. A lot of people would be shocked to see him go.

Say what you will about Stajan, but he's on the 2nd team that has him as their top line center... and he's only what, 25?

Also, 60 points on a team like TO last year... not an easy feat, especially since he wasn't even getting top line minutes.
