Do we keep Poni now?

Seeing as how we have barely any offensive players or veteran leadership on our forward group now, do we resign Poni for sure?

I hope we resign him. He shown that he can play with just about anyone. He can score. He can skate.

He's about the only one I'd like retained. I hope they find a way to move Stempniak and Grabovsky.

Not a Burke player but I don't think Burke would trade that many forwards for picks and ruin the Marlies season by calling players up. Things are crazy atm though. It will be interesting.

Is Kessel a Burke type of player when you think about it? No. Is Bozak? "Burke type of player" really does not exist as people think of it.

Dion Phaneuf is a "Burke type of player" as I think of it.

Only if the price is right (~3million) and its signed before the deadline.

He's going to be hugely important to our powerplay, we just really need to find a centre who can park himself infront of the net. next year.... there definitely is space for him too....

?-?-Kessel
Poni-Grabo/Bozak-?
Kulemin-?-?
Stalberg-?-?

What's a "Burke type of player" anyway?

Lets get Poni signed for 4-5 years at $2.75 per and be done! He likes Toronto, wants to stay here so lets do it!

At that rate, i am leaning towards keeping Kaberle too! He is a perfect complement to lineup with Phaneuf, Komi and Beauchemin. 2 Years from now Schenn - Aulie pairing will be amazing too!

I'd say yes, but I can see Burke unloading him too. Especially if he's able to bring back a potential warm body or a good draft selection.

I think it won't be until the deadline though, and it will come down to how Hanson/Stalberg perform (granted they come up from the Marlies).

Nikolai Kulemin - Tyler Bozak - Phil Kessel
Victor Stalberg - John Mitchell - Christian Hanson

I can see that top-six finishing off the season, Grabovski slotting into the top-six when he's healthy.

The play fast paced, and hard. Poni is NO Kessel. I don't think a Burke player doesn't have to be like Corey Perry. They do exist though. This team is being built by them. Look at the defence: Beauchemin, Komisarek, Schenn, Phaneuf. All are passionate hard working players. Poni has missed the playoffs since the lockout and hasn't seemed very passionate or angry about losing. Not that I've seen.

I'd rather re-sign Pony and have this:

Nikolai Kulemin - Tyler Bozak - Phil Kessel
Victor Stalberg - Mueller???? - Pony
??????? - John Mitchell - Christian Hanson

Wouldn't mind signing Ponikarovsky for 3 Million or under heck even sign Stempniak and Primeau if price right.

I don't disagree, like I said it'll be dependent on how the young players that are auditioning, play out.

And it will come down to Ponikarovsky's demands. With Ponikarovsky being the top goal scorer on the team now, his demands may go up.

I doubt this team can afford Ponikarovsky, and I question whether or not Poni will want to remain in Toronto.

I guess it depends on any other deals we do, the status of our young players, and how much Poni might demand. If he's going to walk at seasons end we might as well move him out. I think Burke might first trade somebody on the blueline for a forward.

No way.

Get what we can for him, for sure.

I agree. I bet as long as Burke gives him a reaonable offer - maybe 500k below market value, he'll accept it so he can stay in Toronto. Ponikarovsky is the one free-agent that I thought should garner a good consideration for being re-signed and it looks like he may just be.

Not to mention, I think after Kovalchuk, Jokinen, and Marleau (and maybe Bourque) Ponikarovsky is probably the best forward - potentially - available this summer.

Yes, here's why:

- trading him we can prolly only get a 2nd...not worth it imo.
- i have a feeling he'd be fairly cheap to sign again
- great 2nd line player who can fill in on 1st line if needed
- If we sign him to like 3 more years, he won't be too old (currently 29yo)
- one of the few leafs guaranteed to hit 20+ goals
- is actually alot more physical then people here say he is

He's also a translator type mentor for Kulemin and Grabo. I'd still like to see him go for some sort of draft pick. He's been sad since his bussom buddy left to Atlanta.

Poni is our 2nd best forward. We've already lost so much offence today. Doubt we'd get a 1st round for him.
