One down, two to go (Redden, Roszival). Wonder if Sather can get a 3rd rounder for Brashear.

I'd be happy with a 7th rounder

I am loving this trade. Just being rid of Kotalik's contract is a really nice plus.

For the people that dont love the idea of Jokinen being on the team, look at it this way.... It is rumored for some time that this is a guy Sather has wanted for some time.... like Redden. Its better that Sather and Rangers get a taste of Jokinen now. It he falters, the Rangers dont resign him. I like the idea of that, rather than Sather throwing him a 4 years contract at the end of this year without seeing him ever play as a Ranger.

Make no mistake, is Kovy somehow makes it to UFA, Sather is going to go after him hard. The only way Sather would resign Jokinen is if he plays well as a Ranger, and it wont impact a possible Kovy signing.

The only downside someone could possibly see from this trade is that it hurts the Rangers chances at a top 5 pick in the draft.

i think people try to make this trade seem better than it is

it was an excellent move to rid the team of Kotalik's horrible contract..one that I was pretty sure was unmovable at this point honestly

however, lets not kid ourselves....Jokinen and Prust are not answers to anything

in this deal, on the rangers side at least, the players involed are simplly pawns moved around for administrative purposes

these players certainlly won't make the team worse but fans are crazy to expect see any real positive impact from these additions

I don't know if I've read more than a few people who actually care that the Rangers got Jokinen and Prust. All we care about is getting rid of Kotalik and getting back two players who will be FAs after this season.

At the same time, Jokinen is an upgrade over both Kotalik and Higgins, no matter how bad he's been lately.

ditto. A team that needs an enforcer may bite you never know. Its only a 1 yr committment and even though he stinks I am sure he can stick out one more yr. 7th Dman may work too

In both cases he counts against the cap.

With LTIR, he still counts against the cap, but you can replace him with any number of players up to his cap hit.

Once he comes off LTIR, you have to get back under the cap (minus the accrued cap hit for the time Brashear spent on LTIR).

So let's say for example that the season is 140 days long. Brashear's cap hit is 1.4 mil, so he'd cost 10,000 against the cap per day that he's on the roster.

After 70 days, Brashear has counted for 700k against the cap. He gets put on LTIR. We pick someone up on waivers the next day who has a 1 mil cap hit. Prorated over the rest of the season, that's 500k.

The net cap hit then for both players for the remainder of the season is 1.2 mil. Assuming Brashear doesn't come back, we can be as much as 700k over the cap at the end of the year.

If he does come back though, we must become cap compliant. So say he was on IR for 35 days. We'd only be allowed to exceed the cap by 350k. If the projected cap hits for the current roster (including Brashear and his replacement) would cause us to exceed that number, then we have to cut salary before we can activate Brashear.

Then its very possible then those were the few posts I selectively read as i didnt take the time to read allt he reactions to this trade

now that im looking through Im seeing that more people are actualy being logical about this trade than i would have expected

lets hope that against all odds this new cap space is used wisely!

This. But I also like the idea of a Jokinen "try out". There seems to be so many UFAs that come to NY to suck. If Jokinen sucks, the Rangers dont resign him. But if the Rangers were never able to trade for Jokinen, I wouldnt be shocked in the least that Sather would have offered him a 4 year contract at the end of this season.

Actually, I wonder if a team with cap space, say, Phoenix, would agree to take Brashear off the Rangers hands by adding someone like Sauer or Byers, for a minimal return? Or perhaps, a Brashear for Exelby type of swap? Sather can always can call in the favors from his buddies around the league.

We are going to have a decent amount of cap space as well.
Cause for 5 mill you can get a whole lot more hockey, and part of that can go towards Kovalchuk

Rozy is the only other movable big-contract player on our team. I think he's got 3 years, 5 million per left right?

Even if we don't move him this season, next year he'll only have 2 years left. Either way, I can definitely see him being dealt very soon.

After the Gomesz deal and this one I'm pretty sure he's used those up.

Understand the sentiment but Phoenix won't be an option. Don Maloney said during the intermission the other night that any deal he makes ahead of the deadline has to be dollar for dollar.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned already, but Prust was teammates with Girardi for about half a season on the London Knights.

So at least he'll know a familiar face in the locker room.

Not for long, hopefully. Girardi needs to be shipped out at the deadline.

Agree with this.

And if he's somehow not shipped out by the deadline, he needs to be traded sometime during the summer.

I keep on seeing numbers such as "$2.75 million" or "$3 million" thrown around in connection with his name because he has arbitration rights. That's overpayment for Girardi.
