It'll be interesting to see the pairings when the new guys arrive. Also, remember that Sbisa will join the team if Portlands season end before ours as well.

Also the Kunitz trade looks A LOT better now
I disagree. I think we're improved but we are still a top 4 defensemen short of being a serious competitive team. If wiz improves so do our chances but we're going to have to deal with one of: Ward,Eminger,Brookbank, Mikkelson, or Festerling playing top 4 minutes, which is not ideal for a contending team.

With lubo in and Whitney out, what does everyone think Murray will do next year to step up the defense? Will it change who we look to sign?

Trade Wisniewski and sign a UFA. Sbisa will be in the top 4.

Niedermayer - X
Visnovsky - Sbisa
Mikkelson - Festerling

We still desperately need a defensive defenseman, and with Sbisa coming it that should be all we need as far as defense goes.

Do you really see Scotty coming back next year??? I hope so, but don't see it happening. If yes, then our defense is one step away from great.

If he isn't coming back, we need to make a splash in free agency.
Maybe lupul can be flipped for a defenseman???

My hopes for next season:

If Nieds stays (hopefully at no more than 5 mil)

Nieds-Mitchell

Lubo-Sbisa

Brookbank-Mikk

Emminger

If Nieds retires:

Lubo-Michalek

Mitchell-Sbisa

Brookbank-Mikk

Emminger

Edit: Severely lacks right handed D-men, don't care, drunk.

acquire Komisarek for Lupul, sign Mitchell/Sutton

Visnovsky - Komisarek
Sbisa - Mitchell/Sutton/Wiz
Brookbank - Oystric/Mikkelson

With Neids:
Neids-Komisarek
Vis - Sutton/Mitchell/Wiz
Brookbank - Sbisa

I'd rather keep Lupul. I'm not a big fan of Komisarik, from what I know and have seen from him.

Listening the fan forum from Ducks homepage. Bob gave contract offer to Wiz's agent but they turned it down. I wonder how far they are. Though Wiz's crew shouldn't ask too much the way he has played.

Well they majority of first offers are turned down... I only wish it was that easy. I'm sure with wisniewskis inconsistent play it won't make negotiatons any quicker. I wouldn't look too far into his initial rejection.

I wonder if Wiz is trying too hard for a new contract. He probably feels he needs to contribute more offensively and make more big hits than he'd normally attempt.

Maybe once he's signed he'll settle down and start to play the way he has in the past. Or maybe he'll play worse, who knows.

Everything I have read say Wiz is looking for 3.5-4.5 mil a year. Granted this isn't confirmed by him or management but if this is true and I am the Ducks I deal him away in the offseason. He is also eligible for arbitration which means if he was awarded say 4 million my guess is the Ducks walk away and we are left with nothing.

I honestly thought the Ducks would have dealt him at the deadline.

I believe Wiz will be traded during the draft. If he thinks he is worth more than 3 million dollars, the guy needs to listen to someone other than his agent. Just because you play with Scott Niedermayer doesn't mean you are a top-2 defensemen. With Lubo and Aaron Ward here, I think you'll see Wiz get bumped down the depth chart.

I remember last offseason before Wiz went to arbitration his agent had made a good case of comparables to what Wiz is asking for and should get.

Murray decided to give him 1 year deal @ 2.75 to problems in arbitration and see if he could prove he's worth it.

I got the impression from the last fan conference call he doesn't and he's more than ready to go to arbitration. If his camp does not back down from of their demands, I think he's gone at the draft too.

Murray has a lot of work to do in the offseason, especially if Nieds retires.

Either way he's going to have to move either Blake or Lupul and sign/trade for at least 2 defenseman.

I think Niedermayer is gone this time. He seems like a guy that can not take an obvious decline in production. This is the biggest drop off from a production stand point though. Selanne I'm not so sure about. If I was betting I'd say he retires, but if koivu comes back it wouldn't suprise me to see the Finnish Flash want one more season.

I don't think it's a given that one of Lupul or Blake are gone either. Yes it would help the defense, but I think in order to trade Blake you are going to give up an asset as well. Lupul would be easier to trade but he was a big part of the Pronger trade and I don't think he will just give him up easily.
