sather is your sixteen year old son that has the keys to your car.
he can clean your car like nobody can. its like 10 people are working on it. it looks great when he is done.
but the problem is: he is the one driving it into mud pits, taking dumps in the back seat and dead hookers in the trunk.
he better clean the car or he would never get to touch it again.
he needs to give those keys back. but anytime he wants to wash it... i say let him.
And that car is 10 years old now with 150,000 miles on it.
You have to be impressed with one things though. He turns nothing into assets. He turned nothing into Kotalik/Gomez which turned into Higgins which essentially turned into McDonagh/Oli. I like the end result.
Which is what? After 10 years, the team is still circling the drain. None of his "genius", "brilliant", "Amazing" trades have brought this team no closer to a cup.
There's good chance kovy will be that next big mistake.
10 million a year for 10 years is a good deal for the first 5 years.
When he exits his prime everyone's going to be *****ing about how we're paying a washed up veteran 10 million a year.
Thats the issue with all of these longterm contracts.
He'd certainly be worth that type of contract the first 5-7 years. But lets face it, if the Rangers are going to do anything, thats the timeframe it needs to be done.
I dont mind paying for a guy that has the talent to back it up.

Haven't you heard? This team is going to win the cup in 3 to 5 years.
Apparently they will be able to compete with the likes of Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Washington.
Drury and Rozy will be off the books in 3 years, but Redden won't. Can't wait for Captain Wade to lead us to the cup!!!!!!!!
Yep, its great he got rid of his mistake. I'd like a GM that doesn't make the mistake to begin with. what was that quote again? "Giving Sather cap space is like giving teenagers whiskey and car keys".
Lets not forget hes hasnt had luck with all the past trades...
He was FORCED (theres that word again) to dump Prucha and Dawes off for spare parts for a playoff run. Both of those guys could have landed more if they were traded off at the right time. Whether you liked them or not, he was hamstrung with the cap and had to trade off upcoming RFA's. Not because he wanted to, but because he had to - Same goes for devaluing Montoya, sure its hindsight. Bourret, bust. He traded for Boyle and gave up a pick. Cmon. Brian Boyle? Someone in the system could be doing what hes doing now, or they could have brought back Betts for peanuts.
And lets not forget some other trades beyond the lockout that were horrendous. What does he have to show for Leetch? I'll give you Zherdev, but even now thats left us with nothing. We could sure use Toots now. Sure these arent exactly BAD moves, they just are ones that havent worked out, but lets not make this guy out to be some sort of wizard after he makes 2 good trades a short time span.
because we got rid of 1 major, huge, gigantic, enormous toxic contract, and got rid of it for an expiring contract.
When Jokinen is gone next season, thats 5.2(ish) million dollars coming off the books.
If the Rangers waive Wade Redden and trade Rozsival, they could actually afford to bring back all the kids AND give Kovalchuk whatever the hell he wants.
The Rangers already had $2.2 million coming off the books next season because of Higgins. This does add an additional $3 million coming off the books, but it is incorrect to imply we just had a $5.2 million windfall.
This poster only shows up to defend Sather, I have yet to see him post in a game thread or any other thread.
I'm convinced he works for the front office. Probably the Rangers' PR department.
I've posted elsewhere including the gdt, but I'm most interested in this because I've never seen a collective group of Rangers fans hate on their own team as much as I've seen on these boards and I disagree with the calls for Sather's head. Post-lockout we've been better than most.
And no I don't work for the Rangers in any capacity... yet

But not good enough.
Better than most would suggest a trip to the conference finals a couple times.
This team has been flawed for several seasons. I think its pretty evident.
Love your positive outlook but I'm sorry i just dont agree, after 10 years of Sathers regime and 6 coaches, rising ticket prices and expectations.

This is an unfair statement.
We do not hate on the team, we hate on the GM, because he's always scrambling to recover from his past mistakes. And he still has other past mistakes (Redden, Drury, Rozsival, Brashear) that are not yet atoned for and are killing the team we love so much.

It's not hate so much as its frustration. Just because we dislike our GM and some of the players hes brough tin, doesn't mean we hate this team.
Its like that argument that if you expressed and anger or frustration with George W Bush after 9/11 a Toby Kieth song would start up and people would gather around you calling you a "ZOMG TERRARIST" this is "MURRICAH SON, LOVE IT OR LEEVE IT" "FREEEEDUM FRIES RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE".
Personally, I think Ranger fans who are still calling for his head after this little cleanup trade of his are more in tune with the real problem.
Remember, Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels. (and no, I'm not going to go down the GWB discussion anymore it was just a comparison).

I would argue that no one hates their own team more than you. You're the one that vehemently supports the one man (other than Dolan) who ensures that this team will never win a Stanley Cup, or even compete for one.
