In the whole "did trading Gomez get us Gaborik" debate, I think people are forgetting about Heatley. If the Heatley deal had gone down, Gaborik might never have been signed. Or maybe he would have, who knows? It's all speculation at this point, though it seems evident that Sather intended to get one or the other, regardless of what happened with Gomez. He could have traded for Heatley and kept Gomez, but it didn't work out that way.
What we do know for sure is that we all wanted Gomez and his toxic contract gone, and Sather managed to get rid of him. I can give the man credit where it's due, but when the only credit he's earning is for fixing his own mistakes, it's just not enough, especially when he keeps making new mistakes.
One can acknowledge that not all moves he makes are negative.
But the man deserves absolute zero appriciation. What he runs is nothing but a freak show.
How many players have we used the last 2 seasons?
If you change the amount of personel we have, you have absolutely no chance to be successful. You can't start from scratch every camp and expect to get everything in order during the season. Its just not doable.
It's in these Kovalchuck trade sweepstakes times that I feel safe knowing Glen Sather is our GM.
Yes very safe knowing Sather has mismanaged the cap so badly he'll either trade for Kovalchuk and bury us in cap hell, with three highly paid players and a bunch of mediocre players/scrubs...or he won't be able to trade for him because he can't fit him in under the cap with the brutal contracts he already handed to Redden, Drury, Rozsival, etc.
Yeah, that's real safe.
I think Devil fans feel just a tiny bit safer knowing Lou Lamoriello is their GM. When it comes to running a team, Sather cannot shine Lamoriellos's shoes.
