Well the Jokinen/Kotalik deal finally went through after last nights game.

The deal, which sees Olli Jokinen and Brandon Prust heading to Manhattan in exchange for Chris Higgins and Ales Kotalik, was reportedly held up because the Flames wanted Jokinen in the lineup for Monday night's game against Philadelphia. Jokinen played just over 15 minutes, took three shots on net and finished at a minus-one. Prust skated just over seven minutes.

With rumours of the trade circulating for more than 24 hours, the team on the ice appeared lethargic as they were soundly beaten by the Flyers on Monday. Jokinen said that he did not want to use the speculation as an excuse.
I mentioned this in the Around the NHL thread but what an odd thing. Holding up a trade to have bodies for a game even though the players know they are leaving.

I was hoping Jokinen would score into Calgary's empty net and give the GM's box the finger on his way off the ice. I think the main page would literally explode if that happened.

It's the first time I ever recall a trade held up to allow a guy to play for the team trading him away. Usually they will sit a guy -- even to the point I recall a few teams at the deadline being short a body for that night's game. The only time I recall it even being close was seeing Peter Statsny skating in the Nord's warmup the night of the deadline... granted, the deadline was hours past and somehow he still wound up in Jersey instead of Buffalo, but hey, this league is always all about fairness and honesty. Really.

Now where did I set that case of sarcasm smilies?

I wonder what would have happened if Kotalik had been dealt from Buffalo for Jokinen, instead of for Dominic Moore. I know Olli's value is much lower now that he's failed in the playoffs, but I can't help the thought from occuring.

Well, for starters, I doubt the Coyotes would have acquired a rental like Kotalik since Phoenix was selling last year. Lombardi made sense for them because he was young, cheap and had another year on his contract. Phoenix got Lombardi, 1st and someone else for Jokinen and 3rd. Kotalik couldn't have got that deal done last season.

What's even more bizzaro is that Stajan, Hagman, Mayers, and White all suited up for the Flames. They had enough bodies, but decided to wait on the trade.

The beautiful part is, they still got shut out.

3 times the Rangers signed ridiculous contracts to an ex-Sabres, 2 out of 3 times, they were able to trade it away... (Kotalik, Kalinin, who knows maybe more from pre-lockout)

I'm thinking their GM must love Buffalo or something that he'd gladly take some of our UFA garbages, only to realize why we got rid of them.

kotalik is getting absolutely blasted in the main boards. he's useless, he's a turnover machine, he can't hit the net, and i think somebody mentioned he may have kidnapped the lindbergh baby. he's not a useless player, he's just a specialty player that needs to be used the right way. not to mention he obviously is not tortorella's kind of player. i hope he does well in calgary.

I've read that too. The way they talk about Kotalik on the main boards is very unfair. Kotalik doesn't hit and he has missed a few wide open nets in the past but saying that he's a piece of garbage is ******** too, imo

That said, I really think taht Olli Jokinen is way more worth than Kotalik. The Rangers / Calgary trade was highway-robbery from new york.

If anything, Kotalik is overrated on the main boards.

He seems like he's grown complacient. At one point when he was younger, he'd sprinkle in a few hits (and at his size, why not?) and some hustle plays that left observers wanting more. Now... now it's all about taking the slapper off the left point and not much else.

Granted, with the loss of Phaneuf, I can see Al getting Dion's PP time on the Flames second unit. I could even see Calgary splitting up Bouwmeester and Giordano off the top unit to get White and Kotalik involved with guys who are solid passing options. Bouwmeester to Kotalik with Ignila on the left half-wall? The could be useful for them if Al's dialled in and puts in some effort.

I'd expect Jokinen will score some, which is the Rangers biggest issue. Even if he's a one-trick pony and doesn't know how to use his teammates well, if they can get a 20-25 goal pace out of him down the stretch, it can augment what Gaborik is giving them. Heaven knows the Rangers issues aren't in net.

Kotalik is what he is: a guy who's a shootout ace, has a booming shot on the PP, but lacks the hockey instincts to get in position to ever make it a threat at even-strength. We all recognized this a while back, but I think there are people who expect him to be more than that, and he simply isn't. He's as close to a specialist forward as you can get.
