If the Habs were to make an offer sheet to anyone, chances are it would be for Blake Wheeler for about the same money that San Jose gave Hjalmarsson and which would cost us a first and third. The Bruins would not be in a position to match even if they wanted to. Another possibility would be Mason Raymond.
Spending a 1st and 3rd on Wheeler PLUS having to pay him 3.5 mil per year would be a horrible deal for the Habs.

He is big and has above average skill but plays a lot smaller than his size. I wouldn't be surprised to see Boston trade him if they can't move Ryder.

aside for the fact that it's eklund, and disregard whether it would happen or not, what would it require for the canadiens to offer ryan an offer sheet that ducks won't match? 6mil per?
If Gauthier does this i'll apologize to him in person and post the pictures.

BTW, I wonder if Erik Johnson is RFA?

Are you sure about that? Wasn't Phoenix given a 2nd round compensation pick for being unable to sign Wheeler, and didn't they trade that pick to Anaheim (which I believe turned into Nicolas Deschamps)?

edit:

Speaking of rumours, on another board, they are saying Markov, at the request of the team, is talking to Kovy about Montreal? Sounds far fetched...have you guys heard of this???

No, probably cuz it's complete bs. We'd have to move a ridiculous amount of salary to give him whatever he's asking for.

Habs do have a second, 50th overall in 2011 in compensation David Fisher. Still though, what Eklund is saying makes no sense as Price isn't signed and the Habs simply don't have the cap space to pull that one off. Same with Kovalchuk.

I wish those throwing rumours took a bit more time to see if they make sense before publishing just anything.

Yeah it is, i'm not exactly sure kovalchuk would fit here though. We're built to have a balanced team, kovalchuk would upset that. I wonder why kovalchuk's agent isn't pushing him to sign for less in a big market like toronto or montreal, the money he'd make in endorsements would be retarded.

I think that a line like Kovy Cammy and pleks would cause some serious Havoc but someone else is right Hammer and A.kos would have to go and it would almost but certainly destroy our cap situation face it boys he isn't coming here

* The Canadiens meanwhile have looked into acquiring Nikita Filatov from the Blue Jackets. One source went so far as to say it was "down to the Habs, Penguins, and Canucks for Filatov...with Montreal having the best offer on the table..Other Hab possibles are Arron Asham, Marek Svatos and Willie Mitchell. Asham is a much better and far more veratile player most than people realize.
Interesting. We'd save salary and I'm sure Kostitsyn is involved.

I think I would rather have Asham to be honest, Filatov doesn't really interest me all that much.

Why does that baffoon think we'd have any interest in Willie Mitchell?

Filatov has elite superstar potential, Asham does not. My main concern is would Filatov want to play RW with Pleckanec and Cammalleri or stay at center at all cost? I would gladly give the Andrei, Pacioretty our 1st and more to get him.

There are rumblings that we're looking to trade a defenseman and Mitchell would be nice cover.

If he's cleared to play, I'd take Willie Mitchell on our blue line in a heartbeat! Of course, we'd have to make room for him though but Mitchell is one of the best shutdown defensemen in the league! The Canucks missed him greatly in the playoffs.

Where are those rumblings coming from? I have not heard anything in regards to trading a significant D-man other then bloggers wish lists!

Would love to get Filatov ..

I think Hamrlik + Andrei + a 2nd would do it.

Eklund has been pretty good this summer on reporting trades and signings, he had stepped up his game. What wrecks his credibility is that he reports everything he hears.

Sending Hammer + to Columbus for Filatov would be great for us. We'd also be able to sign Mitchell.

Filatov...

wow - this would be quite a coup for Gauthier...
an even bigger coup would be to get Filatov to agree to leave Russia where he returned (via a loan) after not being happy with the ice-time he was provided by Ken Hitchcock. Martin would have to play this kid in a top-6 role or risk losing him also...

But if it does happen, the Habs will have a pretty good looking group of young studs to make up the team's future core: Filatov, Eller, Leblanc, Subban, Tinordi, and Price...
