I'm amazed. Cap fans want the world for the #1, I understand that. Yet, you balk at the idea that we'd want a ton for the #3? Oh, and 1 more thing. We have more & better G-prospects than you. No goalies, please.

If Eric Fehr was in this draft (he was barely old enough for the last one) it is projected that he would be taken in the top 8. So that deal you made up has plenty of quality in it with MaxD and eric fehr, plus it has QUALITY added on the end with the others. There is no way the Caps would do that deal.

From today's daily herald:

Only a phone call from the Washington Capitals or Pittsburgh Penguins would entice the Blackhawks to trade their third overall pick in the June 26 entry draft.

The Capitals own the first pick, while the Penguins have the second.

"We would consider trading the pick in one direction only," said Hawks general manager Bob Pulford on Wednesday, meaning up. "Other than that, we're going to keep it. We're going to get a good player."

The two best players in the draft according to most scouts are Russian wingers Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin. Both are considered potential franchise players, particularly Ovechkin, who almost certainly will go to Washington.

At least one draft publication has called Pittsburgh taking Malkin at No. 2 a slam-dunk as well.

The Hawks are expected to choose between Medicine Hat defenseman Cam Barker, Calgary left winger Andrew Ladd and Czech center Rostislav Olesz.

Hawks assistant GM Dale Tallon has said the club will be looking for offensive explosiveness in the draft, though it's believed Tallon likes Barker a lot.

Ladd last week was named the top North American prospect in the final rankings by the NHL's Central Scouting Bureau. Barker finished second and Lewiston left winger Alexander Picard third.

Hmmm...I was thinking if somehow the Caps could wrestle the 11th and 12th picks away from Minnesota and Los Angeles, plus add in another prospect and pick...would that be enticing?

Yes--the Hawks should keep the pick at #3 unless they trade UP.....

Forget WASH -----they'll keep Ovechkin and in any case already have 3 first round picks...

That leaves PIT and Malkin......

Proposal:

To PIT from Hawks: #3(2004) + first rounder 2005 (gives PIT a double shot at Crosby in any lotto based on 2003/04 finish presuming next season locked out)...

To Hawks from PIT: #2 (2004) + #31 (2004).....

Now the logic of the Hawks giving up any chance for Crosby in 2005 is this......simply put every Hawks' fan knows the Hockey Gods simply will not grant the Blackhawks that luck in any lotto...BUT giving another team a double lotto chance would be prized by that other team...PLUS the Hockey Gods are more likely to rub it in to Hawks' fans by deliberately allowing THAT lotto pick given up to win Crosby......(eg. lamentation: "if only we had kept the pick!" and the laughter of hockey fans all atround the world at the Hawks for having the move back-fire)...EXCEPT THAT--Malkin would be the best possible pick the Hawks could get this year and should have gotten from their finish except that once again the Hockey Gods did them in in the lotto)...

AND this now ALSO gives the Hawks 5 2nd round picks in 2004.......so they turn around and TRADE UP again back into the 6th,7th or 8th spot ( giving up 2 of these second rounders plus a third rounder or perhaps one of their good goalie prospects
in lieu of one or some of those picks)....they will also still keep the #31 or #32 pick plus 2 remaining 2nd rounders......this would give them Malkin + either Radulov,Ladd or Picard (Olesz and Tukonen off the board by then) + still have 3 2nd rounders --in other words it could be a great draft for the Hawks if they could pull it off this way...

The key is the initial move if any by PIT ---would they sacrifice Malkin and their 2nd rounder at #31 in return for a good prospect stil lat #3 (Olesz? Tukonen?) AND a 2nd shot at Crosby in '05........IF PIT believes there will be a season long lock-out then they might do this--if they believe there will be a season or partial season
in the '04/05 campaign then all bets are off since the finishes from that seasonwould determine the Crosby lotto...

The other main problem in this scenario is that no fans of the Blackhawks believe their management can actually pull off such a bold bunch of moves...to do all this one must be proactive--the Hawks are traditionally not very imaginative...rather they did tend to wait until others phoned them --but of course Mike Smith no longer is in charge --so maybe $ Bill Wirtz will let Pully/Tallon attempt these moves UP.....

What about this...

To Washington
Chicago's 2004 1st rounder, #3 overall

To Chicago
Washington's 2004 1st rounder, #29 overall
Washington's 2005 1st rounder

This way more than likely the Blackhawks still get a top 5 pick because I don't expect the Caps to be that good next year either. This would give you a better shot at Crosby, and even if you don't get him next year's draft is supposed to be deeper than this years (I think ).

If that 05 is a top 4-5 pick then no expletive way. I'd much rather have Crosby, Brule, Latendresse or Anikeenko, than Barker.
