Overview
Extra InformationDefenseman Niklas Kronwall (knee) did not skate and will not play Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings (4 p.m., Fox Sports Net Detroit).

Kronwall, injured during the first period of Tuesday's 4-2 win in San Jose when he was slew-footed by Jed Ortmeyer, said he wants to give the knee a rest. He expects to skate Monday and be ready for Tuesday's game in St. Louis.

"It feels better than it did right after the San Jose game,'' Kronwall said. "Take it day by day, hopefully two more days can make it even better. I think this will do me good in the long run.’’

As for the play by Ortmeyer, Kronwall said, “I think stuff like that happens pretty much every game. I don’t think he meant to do it on purpose whatsoever. I just happened to be here. I got all my body weight on the left side and he kind of came in underneath me.’’

Kronwall didn't leave the game until after the second period. He explained the bizarre sequence prior to getting hurt, when he lost the blade on his right skate after bumping into the boards and was flopping around on the ice while the Sharks applied pressure in the zone.

“I don’t think that’s ever happened to me before. I felt real weird. I wasn’t sure what was going on there for a while,'' Kronwall said. "I tried a few times to get up. I heard Stewie (Brad Stuart) yelling at me, ‘What’s going on?’ The other guys did a good job of staying in tight and keeping them to the outside.’’

Kronwall was hoping the play would be blown dead.

“I was looking at the ref, he just kind of looked at me like, ‘What do you want me to do?,' '' Kronwall said. “I must have looked like an idiot out there.’’

Jimmy Howard will start in net for Detroit. Kirk Maltby will be back in the lineup, replacing Brad May.

The Kings have won a franchise record-tying eight consecutive games. Detroit is 2-1 vs. Los Angeles this season, including a 2-1 victory on Jan. 7 at the Staples Center, when Howard made 51 saves.

Good luck Ville

No Kronwall for this game has me worried. The Kings have pretty much outplayed us every game so far. They've skated circles around us and their forecheck has been dominating. I think we'll need Jimmy to steal another one here is we're gonna win.

Here's hoping they play a Shark-like game, and not a Duck-like game.

Too bad Kronwal is not ready for this game. The Kings have been red hot lately. We need the whole team to play well, we have to win this game.
