NJ in Kovalchuk race

From Bob McKenzie's twitter:
Quote:
Teams in mix for Kovalchuk include: Boston, New Jersey, Rangers, Philadelphia, Calgary, Chicago and L.A. Some more. Some less. Auction time.
Figured it could use its own thread. NJ, L.A., and maybe Calgary are the only teams won't need the trade to be dollar for dollar.

If this extends over the Olympic break I'd kill myself. I hope it gets done and I'll be relieved if any team gets him (besides the Rangers, I would rather wait till the last second before the deadline then the Rangers getting Kovy)

Meh I'd be shocked like hell if we picked him up. Not A "Devils" type of player.

he's not responsible defensively, but he's an elite talent and that's undeniable. if you can get it, you get it.

If this happened I would laugh because our depth chart would look like this:

LW
Parise/Kovalchuk
Elias
Rolston
Pandolfo

C
Zajac
McAmmond
Pelley

RW
Langenbrunner
Zubrus
Clarkson
Bergfors
Niedermayer
Zharkov

Sure some players would go the other way but I ignored all of the converted wings into centers. The wings are stacked, especially having 4 scoring line LWs...if only we had some centers.

You learn defensive responsibility. It's forced upon you by coaches. Atlanta never had the guts to risk alienating their only player worth more than a quarter.

Elias gets moved to RW or center. Preferably center.

You don't have to backcheck in the most famous arena in the world...

Seriously though, I'd love to have him on the team for the playoff run, but really what are the chances he re-signs here? 10%? 5%? Is it really worth it?

I am sure Sather will get him for a bag of doritos.

We can't compete with those teams on a prospect scale.

Couple points:
-Philly and the NYR don't have much cap room
-He wants a realistic chance to win a Cup
-Didn't Kovy say he wanted some "privacy?" Media markets like LA, NY, Philly, Chicago, etc don't offer that last time I checked

PS This "Devils type player" is crap. Enough.

I really hope not, not only would that be huge boost to the rags, we'd also never hear the end of "IILYA bleeds blue brah, crossroads of the universe"

But I like him as a player - I don't want to hate his ****ing guts.

Yes.

And the chance of us re-signing him depends on how much his contract demands were serious, and how much of it was him begging to get out of Atlanta, how much he wants to win, and how much the cap changes in the offseason.

I wouldn't mind him as a Ranger. It'd be proof that Sather has never left the Rangers dark ages and still believes that talent wins hockey, not teams.

Give me Niedermayer + Koivu for about the same package we would give Atlanta for Kovalchuk... but that's just me.

Even if Sather threw in a ton of prospects - he still has some serious cap room to eliminate to get him, I don't think he'll be able to dump much on Atlanta.

Does Kovalchuk have an NTC? If he doesn't, then it doesn't matter where he wants to go. Waddell has to think about life after Ilya, so he'll trade him for the best return no matter what. The stuff about cap room, Cup contention, and small market wouldn't come into play until the summer.

I honestly believe Kovy would re-sign here if we're willing to pay up. Everyone seems to think that he's a typical Russian, but I don't buy it. I think he wants to play for a contender, but at the same time, he doesn't want to be in a big market where he'll have to deal with a lot of media scrutiny. We're one of the few teams that fit that description.
