4th period says:

@TheFourthPeriod Here's what I'm told... Kovalchuk for Oduya, Bergfors, a prospect (believed to be Mattias Tedenby) and a 1st round pick.

That's a lot if Kovalchuk decides to become a UFA.

The way the defense has been playing all they need is for Gagne to get on a roll and they can play with any team in the east.

As good as WSH and NJ are I think their defensemen can be exposed over a 7 game series. And, I never believed Theodore was a big game goalie.

Pittsburgh is still the team to beat and the Flyers have played them really well especially when you consider everytime (I think) they played the PENS the Flyers played a game the night before and PIT was sitting waiting.

That's a lot to give up especially if they don't resign him although TFP isn't exactly the most reliable.

I don't get this for the Devs, Kovy and Lemaire together? That has epic backfire potential.

It does. TFP was the first with that list....************* said he had confirmation.

Bergfors is a guy they spent a lot of time developing. Interesting to see what he does in ATL.

Other than Parise, Bergfors was their only real piece for the future. They're playing to win now for sure.

Also, it's interesting they now have Parise, Elias, and Kovalchuk, all natural LW. I guess Elias can play center some, but wouldn't they rather have Parise and Kovy together?

Tell me how the Flyers match that without giving up Giroux or JVR? They don't have any other prospects of the same caliber of Bergfors let alone Tedenby, plus a 1st round pick on top of it. In terms of salary, Carle would have been the one to go back to Atlanta, but no one else we would have been able to send to them.

Closer than you think. They wanted Carter plus either JvR or Giroux and Holmgren said no. Flyers were in it a lot later than Holmgren let on.

As of late they've been better, good enough to win the cup? Maybe not. But honestly, just because you add a guy that can score goals doesn't mean you're a cup worthy team. Does it help? Sure. The bottom line is you were really willing to give up key players in the future of this franchise for a player that probably wouldn't sign with us next year and we probably couldn't afford to for a slightly better chance of winning the cup? Then what happens next year when we're sans Kovy, one of JVR or Giroux and the 2010 championship? Is it still worth it then?

Atlanta wins this trade.

Bergfors = Giroux
Oduya = Carle-ish
1st = we don't have
Tedenby = Giroux-the-lesser about 2 years ago

************* is a BS site I believe, I'm not really believing any of it till Allen/Dreger/McKenzie confirms.

I can't believe Lou would give up that much, Devils would be putting it all on the table this year.

That doesn't sound very close if Homer was unwilling to give up any of those 3 pieces.

But didn't do it.

For better or worse, once again the Flyers didn't pull the trigger on the big fish in the trade market, but every single time they're so close to coming here. I've said this multiple times.

It was exactly as close as I said it was the whole time.

That's a very big stretch.

Anyways, the Flyers are handicapped in a way by having Giroux/JVR. Any time we try to trade for a big player, the conversation is going to start with those two and it'd be dumb to trade them considering they could both be elite players within a couple years.

I think one of the reasons we ended up giving so many assets in the Pronger trade was because Holmgren wouldn't include one of them.

Well that makes it a lot more palatable for the Devs.

I don't see how the Thrash managed to trade Kovy and not get back a single blue chipper, but leave it to Waddell.

Now Kovy will have a season ending injury in the Olympics and the Devils organization will

I guess that'd be equal to us giving up Carle, JvR, Giroux, and our imaginary 1st round pick.

Glad we didn't.

For those saying that they didn't give up much... that's a lot considering they won't be able to re-sign him.

Also, it's nice that Oduya won't be playing us as often. He's one of those guys that just does crazy **** when he plays the Flyers.

No, Id leave Parise with Zajac and put Kovalchuk with Elias. Yikes.

I'd say right now, Giroux is more valuable than Bergfors and Oduya is more valuable than Carle.

But we wouldn't have been able to afford him unless we had two big contracts going back. Atlanta wanted youth that we could not sacrifice. If the Devils don't win the Cup and Kovy walks in the offseason, which is very likely, the Devils definitely will be feeling this trade for the next couple of years.
