Lee Stempniak to Edmonton or Buffalo

From Andy Strickland:

Could be true. Burke has done a great job of getting rid of all the trash.

Buffalo makes more sense.

Edmonton is dumb if they trade prospects or picks for him, what's the point?

I hope Stempniak isn't Regier's idea of helping address the team's needs. Do not want.

I will tell you right now, Lee Stempniak sucks. 11G-31pts in 61gp with the Leafs (I dont care what he did on STL) last year, and on pace for 18G-40pts. This is with prime PP time, and 17:55 TOI overall. He plays on the penalty kill but I wouldn't say he's an especially good penalty killer or defensive player either.

He should get a decent (I mean mid pick or mid prospect) simply due to this past, and some team might try to rekindle some of that past offensive spark.

He's been better this season than he was last. Still isn't producing that much, though.

I will tell you right now, with some confidence and in the right situation he could be a 50+ point player. At the beginning of the season, the guy was Toronto's most dynamic forward. He showed signs of returning back to his old form. Then he kind of fell off the face of the earth for a bit.

Something is up with him, maybe if he returns to his hometown, it would be the best possible career move.

$2.5M cap hit. Who on Buffalo would be considered a salary dump?

Ps... if Burke can trade spart parts for Phaneuf and Aulie... I pray he could get Luke Adam from Buffalo.

Luke Adam is the prototypical Brian Burke prospect.

He'd be great if he made about 1.5/yr. I wouldnt mind if he was resigned in that range

I agree........A huge defensive liability loaded with Neutral zone turnovers and does not have the size to defend in his own zone.
I hope he goes and will enjoy the fans of that team trying to make a case for him. I think Buf are too smart to take him but they did go for Moore.

Stempniak will always be a half ass dangler on a bad team( Stl then ,TO NOW)

I don't want Stempniak at all on the Leafs. He's one of those useless players that serves no purpose in your top 9. He isn't good enough defensively or physically to play on your 3rd line and he isn't good enough to be counted on in your top 6. He fits in with the group of Blake and Stajan..They can score 20goals or so a season, but in reality a lot of those goals are garbage goals scored at times when the team needed them least. They have no clutch ability in them, and they play for statistics and for that next contract. No room for those types on a team that sorely needs every win.

Yeah, not a good idea. Maybe if something else went down, too.....? Actually, no, not even then.

Stempniak & Exelby for Moreau, O'Sullivan and Cogliano.

- Edmonton gets two UFA's, freeing about $6M capspace for next season.
- Toronto takes on Moreau's cap hit and buries it in the minors.
- Toronto receives two young forwards, that haven't done much/anything this year for Edmonton.

Stempniak is only 2 years older than O'Sullivan.

That is heavily in Toronto's favor.

Yes, player wise Edmonton really doesn't get much. But look at the $6M in cap space.

O'Sullivan at $2.9M is grossly overpaid for next season, then he's a RFA... they will have to likely tender his contract to keep his rights. It's a lose-lose situation for the Oilers.

Scenario 1: O'Sullivan stinks next year, Oilers must tender at around $2.5M to keep rights, or they lose him.
Scenario 2: He improves and has a great contract year, Oilers will have to give him similar contract or likely a raise.

Cogliano is the best asset in the trade, but he's on pace for 20-25 points this year. Declining quite a bit since his rookie season. Essentially, it's giving up Cogliano to make room to sign plays like Grebeshov, Gagner, Brule, etc.

I wouldn't mind it as a Buffalo fan if they then traded Stafford for some help at center. Let's face it, he's producing as much as Stafford.

I wouldn't trade Cogliano for those 2 let alone two more players.

What does Edmonton do with this cap space though? Free agents aren't so keen to sign in Edmonton.

2.9 for a 40-50 point player who plays the PK and PP and isn't terrible defensively.. seems alright to me.
