O'Sullivan at $2.9M is grossly overpaid for next season, then he's a RFA... they will have to likely tender his contract to keep his rights. It's a lose-lose situation for the Oilers.

Scenario 1: O'Sullivan stinks next year, Oilers must tender at around $2.5M to keep rights, or they lose him.
Scenario 2: He improves and has a great contract year, Oilers will have to give him similar contract or likely a raise.

Cogliano is the best asset in the trade, but he's on pace for 20-25 points this year. Declining quite a bit since his rookie season. Essentially, it's giving up Cogliano to make room to sign plays like Grebeshov, Gagner, Brule, etc.
You can rationalize it to yourself as much as you like, but that deal will never happen.

He's 23rd on the team in +/- this season and managed 36 points in 73 games with Edmonton since his arrival. He's always been a productive hockey player, but he's never really been able to put it together and develop into a well rounded player.

I don't really care, I like POS... but I'm no good at trade proposals. All I know is that Burke will use what he has in cap space to acquire talent. Whether it's with Stempniak or Exelby to Edmonton, or else where.

Never say never.

Dion Phaneuf wears blue and white. Burke is a magician.

Here's my proposal.

Nazem Kadri + Jeff Finger + Lee Stempniak for Jason Strudwick + Mike Comrie

The Leafs save capspace and the Oilers get a promising young player.

Yeah, it doesn't look good from the other side, does it?

decent fit for Buffalo. Regier and Burke like dealing with each other and he brings some needed grit

The Leafs aren't the ones trying to shed salary.

And Kadri > Cogliano.

Moreau for Stempniak. We'll throw in Staios too.

I think he will excel in Buffalo, he needs someone to feed him the puck.

3.5 mil for a Guy who hasn't shown the ability to play solid enough to fit into our top 2 lines? No thanks.

He could, and if Stafford is on the block I see Stemps as a definite Regier target. I'd much rather Torres, but wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see Stempniak become Sabres property.

I hate the idea of Stempniak on the second line with Vanek and Roy. Yuck. If it happens, I hope you're right, Mr. Howard. And I hated fighting you, by the way.

I really don't think Lee Stempniak adds any quality that we need to this top six. He would be a great story, but there are better options out there.

I hate the idea of Stempniak. I could see that + Tallinder re-signed and Regier calling it a success.

I could see Stempniak for Boston's 3rd. Regier would rationalize it as Daniel Paille for Stempniak.

We'll take it.

I don't see why Edmonton would want Stempniak.

He is a UFA at seasons end, there is not much risk involved if you ask me.

When you really think about it, Stempniak to Edmonton makes perfect sense. Edmonton wants to tank the season so with Stempniak you're getting a guy who can kill time in the offensive zone, fan on breakaways, and generally miss the net.

We'd much rather add some sandpaper to the lineup with a guy like Raffi Torres. We have enough guys that can produce at Stempniak's level without bringing physicality to the lineup.

Stempniak is not the type of player we need. But he's a local, so perhaps that angle is being played here.

At one point I thought Stempniak would be a solid NHL scorer.

Oops!

Correct. I fully expect him to be a late season call-up next year.
