lol fourth round pick for stempniak, whats the point of trading him then, he is playing pretty decent, especially on the 3rd line.

He's a UFA and the Leafs aren't making the playoffs. Getting an asset for nothing is the point. Having said that, I would expect Stempniak to return a 3rd.

I would just as well keep him for that price. He is still reasonably young and has more upside then any 4th rounder will bring. He has been playing good hockey of late on the 3rd line at least his effort has been good and his defensive game has improved in my oppinion. He just isn't finishing but the skill is their to do it he just needs some confidence.

he isn't worth anything more than a 4th imo and to the leafs its worth enough to get rid of him. Imo unless you are 100% sure you can resign anyone of your UFA and you think you really need them next year, anyone UFA next year should all be moved before the deadline.

I'd take Lee. I think he'd fit in nicely, especially if you plan on moving stafford or mac in a bigger deal.

I'd rather have Mancari in the lineup in Buffalo then trade an asset for Stempniak.

Does anyone actually look at the second page around here? Christ....

Merged.

And I'm still a big "no" for Lee, hometown boy or not.

Why such hate for Stempniak? He's an ok player. Mancari will never play in the NHL, and it's highly likely that a 4th won't either.

Any chance Burke is interested in Drew Stafford and is putting together a package which includes Stempniak?

Stafford is big, American and can score - all things Burke seems to like.

Stafford is also Buffalo's best NHL-level trade bait at the moment. Stempniak alone isn't going to do it and unless Regier has another kinky three-way set up to get a moderate draft pick (of which Burke has few) to swing to another club to land another roster player.... I'm not sure it works.

We could get into yet another endless debate around Kaberle, who is exactly the type of defenseman/PPQB Bufffalo could use, but seeing how this is a Stempniak thread... not sure it should go there within this thread.

How about Stafford for Ponikarovsky?

Stempniak is only 2 years older than O'Sullivan.
Take out one of either Cogliano or O'Sullivan and it could probably get done. I think the Leafs would ask for Cogliano over O'Sullivan...but then again, O'Sullivan is American

I don't think that's true. Anyone who is that consistent offensively at the AHL level, has an NHL cannon of a slapper, and has a 6'4" frame will get their shot in the NHL.

Stempniak fills NO need in Buffalo... none. He is not an upgrade to Stafford, he doesn't play center, he is not an offensive defensemen, he is not a physical presence...

acquiring Stempniak is trading for the sake of trading... makes no sense

And Kadri > Cogliano.

Is this a joke? What on earth has Kadri done to justify saying he's better than a kid who scored 36 goals in his first 2 NHL seasons

Stempniak actually isn't that bad at all. He's actually great on the PK, and forechecks like nobody's business. He could be a good fit in Buffalo... that being said I wouldn't want to let him go for anything less than a 2nd rounder.

Then feel good about him going to UFA, because I don't see many teams willingly handing Burke a second rounder for a third line player.

Burke did a good job this past weekend, but this is still the same man that made the Kubina trade to Atlanta. He didn't all of a sudden morph into some trading magician. He traded with a team that was desperate for change, so to suggest that he'll pry great players from each team he trades with is wrong. A team's situation plays a huge part in how willing they are to part with assets they might not normally give up. Buffalo is not one of them, despite their recent record.

Something is up with him, maybe if he returns to his hometown, it would be the best possible career move.

$2.5M cap hit. Who on Buffalo would be considered a salary dump?

Luke Adam is the prototypical Brian Burke prospect.
Yeah i am sure Adam is not going anywhere..even if Burke had something to offer..Darcy doesnt give up easily on players..look how long we held on to Ales Kotalik and Max Affingenov...

So you're lumping Adam in with those two before he ever plays an NHL game? Brilliant.

This. Kadri may one day be better then Cogs, but until he plays a full season in the NHL he could still be a bust, and with the Leafs lack of depth in the middle if he was as good as Cogs he would be playing with the big club, whether he was just drafted or not.

I have a bad feeling Stempniak will end up in Buffalo. Dominic Moore 2.0. Please Darcy don't even consider taking Burke's rentals again.
